Working in Vancouver

In about 1 year myself and my girlfriend will be moving to Vancouver on a 2 year working visa. It's got to that time where we need to start getting a few ideas together so we arrive there with a bit of a game plan.

At the moment i run a website and DJ a lot in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I have a lot of experience DJing, putting on events including comedy stand ups shows, music events and even a little bit of festival managment. I would really be into trying to get work in them areas. Do you think going over there and expecting to get a job like that is a longshot? I would have great recomendations from everywhere i've played or put on shows. However over the past year I've just been a resident in one venue, 2 or 3 nights each week.

If anyone reading this knows anywhere that is on the look out or always needs, DJs, promoters, events managment then it'd be great to hear from you. So i guess i am needing dance/rock venues or entertainment venues. I'd really like somewhere like Lavery's in Belfast, where i play now. Leaving that job will be one of the hardest things to do. It's such a great place. www.laverysbelfast.com. If anyone can reccomend anywhere it'd be super.

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense. It's 2:30am and i should be sleeping, but the Stanley Cup is keeping me up.

Thanks for listening.

Richard.

I have a lot of friends that have residencies in Van clubs with little experience. there are a lot of places to DJ in Vancouver, so with good experience and references I would be confident you would have little trouble getting a job. That being said you would probably only be able to get a couple nights a week at most, so not enough to afford vancouvers high living costs. We don't get the same weekday traffic as in europe. Hope this helps

All good words, thanks guys. I'm pretty sure i'll have to prove myself all over again, but that's ok with me. It's half the fun. I'll be getting a 'real job' for sure as i have to work because of my visa, but while working I'll be looking for work that I'm used to and good at, much like us all. Although there are some negative comments i feel pretty good bout it, so thank you. If i went over thinking I'd no chance I'd probably have second thoughts.

And I'll let Dave keep his spot. I checked his set lists. There are some awful tunes, but the kids probably love them.
