Maybe because Gillis has other things to worry about like the draft, moving a goaltender, possibly moving players to make room to get under the cap. And making moves to move up in the draft.

Besides, we need more depth in forwards, not defense.

Gillis just wanted to give Mactavish a win, probably only one he'll get as a GM.

Have to look out for the little guys

I just want to make sure that I am getting this story straight: 7 GM's in the NHL asked about Below (so 23 didn't even waste their time)...6 GM's didn't win (including our GMMG)...and he signed in Edmonton where a fellow young countryman plays, and where, for the most part, the bulk of the roster is within roughly the same peer group. Hmmm if this guy is the second coming of Scott Stevens then it sounds like 29 GM's got out GM'd. If in fact he turns out to be simply a decent serviceable NHL defencemen, we've already got a few that can step up...I think we'll survive this latest MAJOR SETBACK. Now please step away from the keyboard and take your calming meds before we have an "incident".

This. Plus the fact that we don't need any more D.

In a weird way, I think Henrik Tommernes may be a sleeper that will jump into Canuck fans minds in a year or two, and I am guessing most of you readers have never heard of him.

I hope you are right but approaching age 23 and not a goal scorer.
Guessing and may be is not exactly betting the farm material.

I am not buying that.
Corrado and Tanev cannot score.Ditto Ballard,Alberts and the plugs in sixth ,seventh positions
Hamhuis is not a goal scorer. Eddy looked strangely awful at times last year.
Garrison is a keeper but is not going to score 15 goals without taking out our forwards.
That leaves us with pinching Bieksa that is a liability without a stalwart d man like Hammer as his partner.
We could use a real PP QB d man.

Mike Gillis is incompetant...period. He is unqualified and has ZERO track record of success or respect around the league.

What GM experience does MacTavish have?
What's Howson's track record like?
And Tambellini who signed Schultz. How'd that work out for him?
MacTavish, Tambellini, Howson have managed their teams to the playoffs how many times?
How exactly is Gillis being "out GM'd"?

Not saying the Oilers made bad choices. Or claiming Gillis as the best GM. Just pointing out the double standard.

Although I disagree with your assessment of our D the last line is bang on. Letting hoff go was the right move but not replacing him has been a mistake.

That said some pup from the khl is probably not going to fix that problem either.

Just because a player didn't choose us doesn't mean it's a mistake.

The thing about Russians is they stick together, we haven't had a Russian here since Bure. We had no chance signing this guy, move on.

MG has had many mistakes, he's done some good things too, he hasn't yet put his stamp on this team, he should be given that chance. If he doesn't do it this year, he needs to be fired.

Agreed, just because we don't sign a guy we couldn't afford at the league minimum on a 2 way contract apparently it's the end of the world. I forgot, which teams fans are we again? Canucks or Leafs....because out of all my hockey loving friends this sound more like a rabid Leafs fan rant than a concerned Canucks fans post. Also added, we did have Artem Chubarov for a while from USSR/Russia

Fedor Fedorov & Sergei Shirokov say Hi too...not impact players but still Ruskies after Bure.

Corrado and Tanev ain't exactly lighting up the lamp for us,either.
Neither are Kassian or Schroeder.

Tanev is a defensive D-man and doesn't get much power play time, because that is not his natural ability. Having said that, he seems to be working on that part of his game, so don't be surprised if it improves enough that a new coach might try him on the PP. Corrado has played only a handful of games, so what would you expect? I thought Schroeder did real well with Higgins and Jansen on his wing. Too bad the coach didn't use that option more. Kassian has been a slight disappointment, but I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks out in the next year or two given the right opportunity. I think the theme here is opportunity. Lots of our players weren't getting enough of it under AV. I would like us to play the young talent this coming year. Schroeder, Jensen, Corrado, Kassian.... and *maybe* Gaunce.

Have to love how the so called "first-line" and "all-star" stus guys on here constantly shoot down comments from newer FELLOW fans. You guys come accross as flippant and arrogant as Mike Gillis....your hero.

Mike Gillis is incompetant...period. He is unqualified and has ZERO track record of success or respect around the league. He has done NOTHING for this team since he inherited it and in fact, just the opposite....he has been slowly destroying it. I can list all his screwups but that has been done already several times in several topics.

I swear he is one here writing the responses to people that question his ability.

Now in this example, like it it or not the Canucks showed interest and then dropped the ball. That is bad management....period. They say the coach is responsible for the play on the ice well then surely the GM is RESPONSIBLE for the management off the ice. The buck stops with Gillis.

Fire him already and lets all move on as Canucks fans.

All I want is a Cup before I die and I will NEVER get one with Gillis at the helm.

Then go on a diet, exercise and plan for retirement wisely .. maybe if you outlive Gillis your dreams will come true, Dorothy ..

He signed a ENTRY LEVEL CONTRACT which is a TWO WAY CONTRACT and is no guarantee of ice time infact it is no guarantee of even making the NHL club. The player is willing to play in the system and earn ice time. Actually the Justin Schultz contract was also an entry level contract and their GM said there was no guarantee of ice time when ask about Schultz. If all that it took to sign great players was a guarantee of ice time i'm sure Gillis would say what ever it took to sign a player but no GM would ever guarantee this and I often wondered where those rumours get started.

First of all it was a one year contract that is 750k, but his cap hit will roughly be 1.5 with bonus. That means oilers are taking a risk on spending 1.5 of their cap on a player who may or may not have a good transition into the NHL, something the canucks can't afford to do. We need to lower our cap not take risks.

Look at the flames last year with Cervenka. He took up 1.7 on their cap hit and now has bolted back to the KHL

As a dman you look at the roster... Sure the GM can not promise top minutes right away. So you look at the EDM roster and be like, that is not very thick, I can make that no problem... You look at the Van roster, holy $hit 5 guys making over 4 mil and a young guy who looks like a vet, how the poop can I crack that... Signing on with the young team, with top talent and a d core that is thin.

If you like looking at statistics to determine who's better, you're just a casual fan.

2.41 season GAA isn't very impressive. Let's not get into playoffs and his SV%.

Cory Schneider is the next Patrick Roy.

A GM can't force a player to sign. they have preferences or maybe already had their hearts set on specific teams

So Lack and Lain just popped into the rogers arena to say hi. It's rarely the high profile signings that work. Gillis has managed to find a good goalie and 4th line center outside the draft. I guess Mctavish/tambellini got out gmed there. Seems like Edmonton could use both.

Sorry that we forgot 2 players whom combined played less than 23 NHL games, it's not like those players could've recruited any other Russians to join us like Yakupov can.

Gillis out GM'd again!

What else is new,,as time goes by I am beginning to think this guy doesnt have a clue....

I was willing to give him the benifit of the doubt and said nothing,,but the more I hear and times goes by,,I think we are in real trouble here.

He takes way to long to make a decision on anything,,his attitude sucks,,he thinks he is holier than thou...I am getting fed up with the direction this team is going,, and if he hires Arniel as coach,,after 43 years I am done..Arniel couldnt coach Bantam...

Anyway,,,I am glad this is Gillises last stand,,,this guy is quickly making us the joke of the league.
