sexpanther
Compliance buy outs have hampered teams needing to shed salary who are unwilling to throw away buy out dollars because of the have not teams pushing for a lower salary cap in the last CBA. Teams now sit and wait for eligible players to be bought out and sign them for cheap, with exceptions (Lecavalier). Canucks got royally screwed by new CBA, through our own faults too. That's why Schneids had to be traded, Luongo staying and Ballard put on waivers. Zero market for anyone suspected of being bought out or with teams at or near the cap who need to shed artificial cap space. Well played NHL, well played! Maniwaki Canuck
why wouldn't they. they know the nucks are up against it. If i can get Ballard for 3 mil vs 4.25 and save that money for another player why wouldn't i? not ruthless just good business sense

In the Slot
Yes agreed, and yet I wonder how many of those complaining about all these consequences supported the owners during the lockout. Probably the majority.

CB007
MG making the right moves now, especially with an excellent draft day. Guessing he tried to trade Ballard and Booth for picks or a minimum return but no one budged so waiving him is the next thing to do.
JensenFan2011
So essentially we traded Grabner and a 1st round pick for ......NO ONE!
Lockhart
Give me a break, Francesco Aquilini is supposedly worth $5 billion and you are telling me he can't buy out a couple of contracts ?

Dragonfruits
This is a good take on what's happening. Every team is waiting for every other team for buyouts and then pounce on these new UFA's. TSN's Dreger had said after the VL buyout: Tampa's lost is some other team's gain. This is why I was SO against buying out Luongo. We CANNOT let other teams have him for cheap at the expense of the Aquilini family's millions.
Jester13
IIRC, the NTC kicks in at the start of free agency this year on July 5th. We have a few more days of Edler drama yet.
tas
if ballard clears what do you want to bet edler gets traded for below value. dale tallon, a far better gm in all respects than mike gillis, was fired for far less after building a winner in chicago that carries on even now. Outsiders
YES we need to clear cap. If ballard goes. Schneider + Ballard = 8.2 million dollars in cap space
Tanev's Smirk
Well I'm going to miss Ballard (assuming he's claimed, traded, or bought out when placed on unconditional waivers). He's one of the only Canucks currently under contract that I like.
Maniwaki Canuck
yes we feel sorry for a man who;s being paid 6 mil a year and has 40 ml left who is 'not sure' how he feels about playing a sport for a living and getting paid 10s of millions, because people weren't nicey nice to him no issues here with the players... as much as gillis has been an idiot, he is right about one thing. luongo is paid alot of money to compete. show it and stop whining. that's why people sided with the owners suck it bro
