Luongo hasn't got much choice here. The contract sucks...he was there when it was signed. He can't fault Gillis for not being able to move the contract after Betttman's draconian, mean spirited rule change to long term contracts that were legal when signed. He's got to come play. I for one, hope I get a chance to Louuuuuu! real loud.

It's part of a GM's job to create a positive environment for a player, so he can play to the best of his abilities... that Gillis hasn't done this with Luongo is an understatement. If things go well there's no problem, but if they don't fans will claim he's not trying or wants out. This is a very difficult situation for him to be in.

If Lou wants out of Van his only option is to come back and play lights out hockey. The CAP should recover next year which reduces the financial impact to acquiring teams. Yes, the desire to win is a hugh motivator for professional athletes. It does not change the reality that they have to make money in a short period of their working careers to secure their families future. I highly doubt that Lou will risk his Vancouver contract to satisfy some perceived slight by Vancouver management.

Vancouver management had the responsibility to ice a team that they thought would win a CUP. It is the reason why they signed Lou to his contract in the first place. The term of that contract allowed them to sign even more quality players to make that CUP effort. That is why everyone was talking about 'home town discounts' on new contracts. No one was chirping at the time that any of these contracts were anything but gravy for the Canucks and the fans that cheer them on.

The sad reality about life is that not everything progresses in a positive vein all the time. There are setbacks and both Lou and the Canucks are experiencing that right now. The economics of this situation will force a reconciliation. Lou has absolutely no choice and apparently neither do the Canucks as they were unable to move him.
