[Proposal] Signing Schneider in 2015

Recommended Posts

Luongo becomes tradeable in 2016 (ie if he plays 3 seasons, there is almost no cap recapture), and is therefore likely to still be here. Schneider will either leave NJ (as they look like they're going nowhere), or receive a huge deal ($55-65 over 8 years) from NJD.

If he somehow winds up with a 1 year extension, and Luo wants out, and someone wants Luo, and Lack and Eriksson don't live up to expectations, then maybe this happens, otherwise, I don't think so.

Cory is a solid goalie. Always was. But he showed last year that he cracks under pressure. If he was still 20 years old it wouldnt be too bad but at age 27 you cant expect him to turn into Patrick Roy.

He has played 80 NHL games in his whole career and has very limited playoff experience. If someone told me I had to tank my entire year and then give up my #9 pick for that, I would have told you to forget it.

Cory is about as good as he is ever going to be. He is entering his prime years as a great positional goalie but one who has no extra gear when the going gets rough.

He would be asking north of 6.5mil from any team and I think Lack and Erikkson will give us almost as good goaltending for far less cap space.

LOL Yes try sign the goalie that just went through what will be the most dramatic poorly media handled 2 years in his career then traded away after being told he was our number 1 ................ I love him but I dont think we will se him in a Canucks jersey again

Wow, someone still going through the 7 stages of grief?. Only worked your way up to stage 3, bargaining. Let it go man. Schneider is gone, He'll most likely never be a Canuck again. The sooner you get to acceptance the happier you'll be lol

Luongo's current recapture owed is about $7.5M. It increases by about $1.4M in each of the next 5 seasons. The recapture reaches a peak of $14M with 4 seasons to go, then decreases when his salary is lower than his cap hit in his last 4 seasons.

IMO, his contract becomes more immovable as he gets older, and right now someone might have gambled on getting some of his prime years and worry about the balance of the contract later. In 3-4 years time, if his play has slipped, he's going to be tough to move.

That's not how cap recapture works, though. You are only vulnerable for the years when the player is on your team.

So if a team traded for him after the 2016 post season, this is how it would work out for them:

1 year (2017): Salary $6,714,000 - Cap $5,333,333 - Benefit $1,380,667 - Total Benefit $1,380,667 - 5 years remaining - Annual Recapture Penalty $276,133.40

2 years (2018): Salary $6,714,000 - Cap $5,333,333 - Benefit $1,380,667 - Total Benefit $2,761,334 - 4 years remaining - Annual Recapture Penalty $690,333.50

3 years (2019): Salary $3,382,000 - Cap $5,333,333 - Benefit -$1,951,333 - Total Benefit $810,001 - 3 years remaining - Annual Recapture Penalty $270,000.33

4 years (2020): Salary $1,618,000 - Cap $5,333,333 - Benefit -$3,715,333 - Total Benefit $0 - 2 years remaining - Annual Recapture Penalty $0

5 years (2021): Salary $1,000,000 - Cap $5,333,333 - Benefit -$4,333,333 - Total Benefit $0 - 1 year remaining - Annual Recapture Penalty $0

6 years (2022): Salary $1,000,000 - Cap $5,333,333 - Benefit -$4,333,333 - Total Benefit $0 - 0 years remaining - Annual Recapture Penalty $0

2016 means he'd need to play on for 4 years to avoid cap recapture for his new team, and 3 years (or 1 year) to have it being really small. 2017 recapture would be small if he retired after 1 year, and 0 if he stayed more than 1 year. Trading him after the 2018 postseason would mean his new team would not be liable for cap recapture. If he is still performing to a high standard then, he would be very enticing.

At that point, the Canucks would be on the hook for $11,572,002 total, spread over the years remaining on his contract (if he retires early), working out as follows if he retires in the year listed:

2016: $1,928,667.00 per year for 6 years

2017: $2,314,400.40 per year for 5 years

2018: $2,893,000.50 per year for 4 years

2019: $3,857,334.00 per year for 3 years

2020: $5,786,001.00 per year for 2 years

2021: $11,572,002.00 per year for 1 year

2022: $0.00 per year for 0 years
