[Report] Leafs, Kadri remain far apart in negotiations

Recommended Posts

Karma is a pitbull chompin' on the Leafs rear, dating back to Harold Ballard requesting Roger Neilson to coach the team whilst donning a paper bag! Don't know why they were so lame from late 60's to that juncture, but by God!..HOW can a team with that amount of cash, & hordes & masses of passionate fans, be probably in the worst THREE teams(performance/points-wise) over the past three decades? It's utterly inconceivable!

So they have a 2nd line/3rd line tweener in Bozak, a good depth center in McClement, a prospect, and a guy in Bolland who used to be an elite shutdown center - but is now actually just a cap dump Chicago couldn't move fast enough (and were no doubt relieved as hell to do so and actually get something for him).

Absolutely terrible underlying numbers for Bolland, worst on the Hawks, just a shade under 50% offensive zone starts, weak in the faceoff circle at 46% - all in all, a shadow of the player he used to be. Nonis got suckered imo, particularly heading into a cap drop offseason. Great move by Bowman, brain cramp of a move for Toronto, and then to turn around a buy out a far superior player in Grabovski.

Managing the cap is a huge part of being a GM in the NHL, Nonis is up against it without his top offensive defenceman and one of his top 2 centers.

If he was one of the better GMs in the league, he wouldn't be in this situation.

Burke and Nonis couldn't get out of the 2nd round with this core, Nonis didn't even make the playoffs in his last year here with the same core. Again not the work of one of the better GMs in the league.

I was pretty excited when local boy Nonis took over the reins in Vancouver but after seeing what he did, I was happier when he left.

Your assessment of Bolland is far from correct. No the Hawks did not get rid of him at the first opportunity they got. Bolland suffered through injuries that derailed his season last year. The initial plan was to start him on as 2nd line center because the Hawks had no one who could fill in that role last year. Suffice to say that Bolland was not adequate at that role and Q knew that but still regarded Bolland highly enough to let him try. Bolland should never have played in an offensive role but he was our best center after Toews. Shaw and Kruger have been retained because they come cheaper and the Hawks needed the money to keep Bickell after his playoff performance. Bolland's salary made him a casualty, a million less and he would have stayed a Hawk.

Bolland is still a good player, injuries have really been a problem for him the past few years. If he can get back to being healthy he is still one of the best 3rd liners in the game. I think Bolland will have a good year next year provided he stays healthy, he probably leaves as a UFA next year though.

How is it a fail for both teams?

The Leafs get a 2C/3C that plays with his heart on his sleeve,

The Canucks get Tortorella coachable players in both 2C Kadri and a future 1D that could make the team sooner rather than later, while the Canucks younger.

A bright future comprised of:

SHINKARUK

HORVAT

KASSIAN

JENSEN

KADRI

GAUNCE

REILLY

TANEV

SUBBAN

LACK

Tortorella is great with young players.

Nonis is a cluster fluff.... Drafted seriously pooly here. Traded key draft picks for aging vets at the ends of their careers. A good assistant GM he is but not at running the show.

Yes, he drafted Schnieder, Edler, and a few others in '04, but THAT scouting list was already in play from when Burke was here. Drafting Reilly was kind of a no-brainer being that high in the draft. Gauthier was actually a surprise to me.

Kadri's camp has it easy, because all they have to do is point at what TO gave Kessel after one decent year as an entry-level RFA:

5yrs, $5.4mil per.

Given how Henrique got locked-up for 6 years, why wouldn't Kadri think he can't get 6x6?

Basically, congrats, TO. You made the playoffs. Now it's time to pay the piper(s).
