City speed limits could drop from 50km/h to 40km/h

There are some people here who believe that a lower speed limit will result in more tickets. If the police wanted to meet a certain quota, they can meet that quota in no time, without much effort.

All they'd have to do is stake out at an hov lane or a wide secondary road and bam! They' be dishing the tickets out as fast they can write em.

So pointless. Waste of time and money.

“I’ve heard some people make some comments that this is a non-driving crowd that’s pushing this. For the record, I drive a Porsche,” she says.

Well Ms. Gudgeon, I drive a Porsche too and believe that you should join the non-driving crowd.

People are also driving way too fast to properly control their cars. They are distracted and a few people shouldn't even be driving at all period.

I think the speeding limit decrease "sucks" as an idea but people are really missing the issues when it comes to accidents. People who are in accidents aren't going at 50 km/h. They are going over the limit and can't stop in time. If you go at 50, there's so much control and the margin of error is higher.

IMHO, if you're driving at 50 - and everyone was following the rule. you shouldn't even be getting into accidents.

I think training needs improvement.

my goodness... if you can't control your car at 70 km/h so that there needs to be an enforcement of 40 km/h limit, you should not be licensed to drive a car... the only time you need a speed limit is in school and park zones where it makes sense to drive below 50, other than that, upwards of 70 should be ok, and 120-150 on highways should be the norm... 80 km/h on the highway, please, that's just absurd

It all depends on the road.. I usually just go with the flow of traffic instead of gluing my eyes to my speedometer but I know I don't get up to 50 on residential roads.

Still though, everybody my age that I've heard has passed away have almost all been speed-related (not alcohol or drugs) car accidents. I know it wasn't from going 50 but a lot of people drive like idiots and some of them pay for it or even worse make somebody else pay for it.

A Union of British Columbia Municipalities vote could see the default speed limit drop by 10 kilometres an hour across the province but one Vancouver councillor is skeptical:

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – An upcoming vote by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) could have drivers slowing down across the province.

Victoria councillor Shellie Gudgeon says the move would blanket all cities in the province and would reduce the default un-posted speed limit from 50km/h to 40km/h.

“It would be beneficial if it was a blanket 40k and where it was necessary to have it 50, 60, 70 kilometres an hour, then it would be signed,” says Gudgeon.

But Ian Tootill with speed safety group SENSE BC says the idea is completely unnecessary and doubts people would support it.

“This is not on the radar of the average person. I don’t actually think this will pass at the UBCM, I just think it’ll die on the vine.”

He calls supporters of the move car haters but that’s a claim Gudgeon disputes.

“I’ve heard some people make some comments that this is a non-driving crowd that’s pushing this. For the record, I drive a Porsche,” she says.

Vancouver councillor Kerry Jang says he doesn’t support the move, saying it’s unnecessary in a large urban centre.

“In a large city like Vancouver we have a lot of controlled stops, a lot of stop signs. Certainly a lot of shorter blocks so it’s not necessary. To slow it down would slow down our commerce.”

The vote is set for September.
