Speed Kills?

The video author refers to ICBC as a socialist organization (and it was a facetious point on my part in case you didn't catch it), did you even watch the video or are you just another sheep who fails to achieve critical thinking? You're once again making claims with no grounds, and ignoring the facts. Blind followers are a burden on society.

Here is a wrinkle in the video. He claims that accidents go down when all drivers are travelling at the same speed. Tickets start at a little over $100 (I haven't had one in over 10 years). Most people make that in a day or two (if on min. wage). Now if tickets were TEN times bigger, would people pay closer attention to their speed and what they are doing while they drive. You bet they would. Then most drivers would be travelling at the same speed and PAYING ATTENTION. Problem solved.

Fear/punishment as a form of enforcement has been proven over and over again to be the least successful tactic. You're far better off educating and training people to understand, practice and respect laws for the benefit of themselves and society. Of course that also requires that those rules be logical and based in fairness which is not always the case. As illustrated (albeit poorly, as discussed) in the video.

Most people don't murder people and strict penalties don't deter the ones who will. We are talking about the 85th percentile who do follow the laws when the punishment is severe enough to deter them. I speed at times, but never more than 10 - 20 km because that level of ticket doesn't really deter me that much. I would pay A LOT more attention if tickets started at $1000. So would most other drivers. That little bit of education WOULD change their habits, and mine.

I also agree that having cops visible, even having some unsues cop cars parked on the side of the road would get drivers to slow down.

I saw this video a few days back and I liked it and agree with it, but I think the point of speed kills is getting missed.

The thing is accidents are going to happen no matter what, and going slower simply gives you a better chance of survival. Would you rather make a mistake going 50km or 80km? If you increase the speed limit, there might be less accidents, but there might be more fatalities. Seeing as most accidents happen at intersections, there is the chance that more people will try and run the yellow light since they are already going pretty fast. So I tend to think that the speed kills program is more designed to protect a potential innocent victim of an accident.

I do agree though that long stretches of road without intersections need to have their limit increased. Some places around here are just ridiculous and its quite obvious that they just want the ticket money.
