Group wants to bring back gender-neutral ‘O Canada’

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Author Margaret Atwood is among the list of notable Canadian women who want to re-word “O Canada” to make it more gender neutral — true to its original version.

The group wants the words, “in all thy sons command” changed to “thou dost in us command.”

In 1913, the lyrics of Robert Stanley Weir’s original English version of “O Canada,” were changed from “thou dost in us command” to “in all thy sons command.” There was no documented reason for the change.

“The words ‘all thy sons command’ in the English national anthem suggests that only male loyalty is being invoked,” Atwood said in a release.

“Restoring these lyrics to gender-neutral is not only an easy fix to make our anthem inclusive for all Canadians, but it’s also long overdue.”

The group, including former prime minister Kim Campbell and the mother of the first female Canadian soldier killed in combat in Afghanistan, said they merely want to restore the original English lyrics

Coming from a guy who recites and sings the anthem every morning after getting out of bed, I think its a great idea. In the words of the bartender in the movie Anchorman "woman can do things now."

Didn't know that's what it originally was, don't know why we wouldn't use the original.

That's reasonable, it probably sounds better since it's the original lyric

Well, looks like I'll be making an ass of myself by flubbing the lines from here on out

Stop whining and just sing the damn thing. It is what it is. I'd say the same thing to secularists if they said "God" needs to be removed. Does a single word have a big impact on how you feel about your country? Is it really that inflammatory? Does it affect national policies? No. Non issue.

There are more important things to make groups about. Waste of effort and energy by these people that could be directed elsewhere.

who cares -_- it sounds better when it's "in all thy sons command" anyways compared to "thou dost in us command"... it just sounds confusing and people will mispronounce it for sure

Margaret Atwood needs to meet some members of the Organization of Men Against Amazonian Masterhood. They will set her straight!
