According to Ben Kuzma's twitter Torts will wait a month to appoint alternate captains. I don't see what the point is, Kesler and Daniel are who should be wearing the As, so no need to wait or change anything. Burrows and Bieksa are wearing them tonight in San Jose as away As.

Is it really necessary for Torts to change the As?

Well he doesnt know the players a whole lot yet. Plus changing it up and giving it to those who deserve it could help give a boost.

What's wrong with that? He wants to see who the leaders are on this team. It probably will be Kesler and Daniel, though Bieksa or Hamhuis might have a shot.

Didn't Henrik pick the alternate captains in 10-11?

Torts had no say in who the captain is. He was told.
Now he is told he has no say in whom wear the A's for at least one more month.
Gillis has already whacked him down twice on this issue- and rightly so.

I completely agree with that, torts shouldn't have he sole decision on that matter. Hank's the captain, a new coach should not have a say in that. It's ultimately up to the entire management team and players. A coach, IMO shouldn't be solely responsible to name a captain it's a team decision, or at very least an entire management decision including coach and GM.

There will probably be four is my guess. Daniel and Bieksa for the road, Kesler and burrows or Hammy for home?

Torts said that he only wants two alternates.

I really hope that Kesler gets his 'A' taken away. His ego seems to have gotten bigger over the summer. I think the team sees him as a selfish player who doesn't put the team first.

I find that hard to believe considering how he plays most nights.

As long as Kes stays healthy I'd say he should get one, he's a heart-and-soul player on this team. Hammer should too for being the quiet leader he is, but if he keeps making mistakes and getting benched I'd say (at least for that time being) he wouldn't deserve an "A". Burrows and Bieksa are also quietly playing leading roles on this team.

I'd like to propose the idea of having rotating "A's". Minnesota rotated their captaincy to whoever played well; while Hank is still the default leader on the team, giving a role player an "A" for their contribution could boost morale as a reward (e.g. the coach could decide, or the players could vote for anyone but themselves, after a game who they think deserves an "A" because that player's act proved their heart and willingness to take initiative in doing something for the benefit of the team, e.g. by making a courageous play to preserve a lead or something of that regard. The player selected would get an "A" on his jersey for the next game.)

If I had a vote, I'd give an "A" to the guy who

- is a fan fav with heart 'n soul on his sleeve
- took a total "home town discount" rather than telling other guys that they should while he went for as much as he'd get on the open market
- never gives up and sure never floats
- never gives an excuse while claiming that his assortment of injuries aren't an excuse
- always does whatever he's asked without complaint or chip on the shoulder no matter the role, the line, the ice time minutes or the (lack of) accolades
- has a knack for sinking timely goals, even if it requires putting his body on the line and his nose in the net to do it

This guy's name is Burrows. Plain and simple. Burrows.

Give the other "A" to a d, Hamhuis or Bieksa, a vet who tends to play it cool, calm but strong, doesn't look for the rough stuff but always ready to stand up for a mate... I'd probably go Bieksa as he's a proven good talker, good press/media interview guy too.

Daniel, Kesler... Then can go twiddle. Don't need Daniel with an "A" when he never says or does nuttin' different than Henrik, and already has the veteran voice in the room anyway. Don't need Kesler when we got a guy like Burrows who has all of Kesler's positives and none of Kesler's negatives.

I hope Torts is taking in Hanks advice too. Hate for him to undermine our captain. Although this could be good for the team a chance to prove you are a leader to the coach and it gives players some extra umph to play a little harder. Give one to Tanev, you know youth movement. Am I Right?

Didn't Higgins wear an A in like the first game of the season or was I seeing things. Frankly I think its hard to appoint the A's on a team that has so many leaders that the canucks have. Obviously Kesler and Danny are locks, but guys like Bieksa, Hamhuis, Burr, Hansen or Higgins are really close. In Hansens case he works his ass off every shift and leads by example. IMO if I had to name the 5 A's (previously Malhotra, Kes, Danny, Burr, Bieksa) I'd say it would have to be Kes, Danny, Bieksa, Hansen and Hammer (excluding Burr because he's injured and wont be back for a while)

I think it might go to garrison(if he steps up as a leader in the room) and Kesler. If not garrison than probably burrows. Daniel doesn't need the A like others have said since he and hank think along the same lines.

Shouldn't matter. You don't need a letter to be a leader; this group has been together long enough that there's no shortage of great candidates

Kesler, Daniel, Burr, Hamhuis, and Bieksa are all excellent options.

if bieksa loses the 'a' i'd expect him to be traded sometime thereafter. he's been kept aroudn because of his voice in the room
moreso than his play, and taking the 'a' away means they no longer value that voice as highly.
