Zack Kassian not what we think he is?

Cody Hodgson sucks too. Both teams lost the trade.

Would Cody have looked better on the Canucks? Meh, probably not, he hasn't gotten faster and is still a liability in his own zone... We would've noticed it eventually. Can't shelter him forever oon the 3rd line either.

And the speed thing is something that would never have improved even if he was on the Canucks. Liability in his own zone? Maybe, but meh, probably not.

Agreed both teams lost the trade but the nucks should have gotten a better prospect for Cody because he was considered a top prospect at the time. Still a bad trade in my books because we should have had a much better return but your right both players suck. :(

All of the Hodgson supporters have come flying out of the closet whenever they think there is an opening.

Can anyone tell me with a straight face what Kassian is supposed to produce on the 3rd line with plugs and no PP time?

He has a goal at least . Hodgson has one lousy assist in spite of the copious amounts of juicy PP time on the half boards.

I don't understand this thread.

What is Kassian supposed to be given his icetime and role? Seems to me he is exactly where he is supposed to be.

Is The Province making this a bigger story than it is or is there truth to it? He turns 24 in 2 months, he can't pull this stuff.

I thought he was clapping at whats his face on the Oilers for his diving performance? Typical media turning a quote from a heated coach, after a loss, into a new controversy.

I thought he had a valid point and clapping for a "diving performance" is the same thing as calling a ref out.

We should keep Kassian, I think he will really break out about half way through the season. And if he doesn't break out he's still a very good bottom 6 player that can put up points and be physical.

the problem with this view is that his biggest challenge right now is his play away from the puck and hockey IQ. not super reliable defensively which doesn't really make him a good fit in the bottom 6. he needs second line minutes or needs to settle into a role and learn as the season progresses. way way too early to panic and put unneeded pressure on kass but he needs to get some confidence and find his spot.

Bertuzzi was playing on our 4th line at age 24.

Comparing Kassian to guys like Nash, Lucic, and Bertuzzi right now is dumb. These guys either got their shot right away on weak teams, or had to earn their way up like Bertuzzi. Kassian will have to do what Bertuzzi did to become a top player. that takes patience.

No wonder fans in this city are always so bitter. They have ridiculous expectations that are never met.

Kassian hasn't had to earn anything and that might be part of the problem. He's been given every chance to succeed, it's no secret MG pushed him on 2 coaches. I've been saying for a long time now he belongs on the 4th line. He's physical, can play in the other teams end a bit but is a liability against quality competition. Pretty much exactly what you would classify as a 4th liner.

I'm not saying that's what he'll always be, but right now he shouldn't be in the top 6.

Kassian needs to show a greater sense of urgency on every shift for a whole game. Then he has to do it again for the next game, and the next, and the next. Seriously, half the time he skates like it's a summer scrimmage with a bunch of beer buddies. The rest of the time he's coasting. Clearly, the penny hasnt dropped for Zack and it is a pity. He is a mountain of a man with amazing skills and awesome strength, but he needs to develop a sense of hurry-up, and he needs to do it now. Come on, Zack, and harken to the words of the late Fred Shero, when talking about how he wanted his players to play along the boards, "Arrive there first, and in ill humour".

He might have had a point, but he blew it completely out of proportion. It was not deserving of an entire news article with 2 minute video. Not to mention, the reporter is just feeding the conspiracy nuts for the whole "refs are against the Canucks" argument.

I think sports reporters in Vancouver are just bored.

i'm not saying kass will ever be a bert or neely but the islanders gave up on bert too young and the nucks gave away neely. instead of gambling on yet another unknown maybe this team should gamble and have the patience to see what this young man turns out to be. 3 seasons with three coaches and different systems the vets struggle yet we expect the young guys not too.

This coach has had very little time to tinker with Kass.

Let's wait until the trade deadline before even thinking about it...by then his head should be right.

It wasn't until year 6 as a pro that Todd Bertuzzi jumped from a career high 23 points to 50.

Kassian is on year 5.

Bert put up 39 in 72 his rookie year.

Bert played up and down the lineup for 2 years, then on canucks he had 15 in 22(50+ point pace), 16 in 32 (40+ pt pace), then 50 points.

Kassian hasn't had the same minutes, and has been very effective out the gate in the AhL, but fact is he's got just over a 30 point pace in his career year.

10 in 44 (under 20 point pace), 11 in 39 (20 point pace), 29 in 73 (30+ point pace).

At least theres progression rather than regression. Powerforwards take their sweet time figuring out all the nuances to translate their game from simply being bigger than everyone else, to playing against men and having to be strong smartly to gain the edge.

he's got the tools though. Lets hope he finds a way to make it work.
