Jake Virtanen (Updated)

If he's from BC we should take a chance on him. Players who grew up here seem to flourish recently (Hamhuis,Santorelli and Garrison)

That's a pretty stupid reason to draft a player. You draft the best player available.

Personally I don't believe in drafting the home town guy. He'd have many friends around and making big bucks he'd want to party every night. I would preferably want a guy who doesn't know anyone in the city whose focus is solely on hockey

Tuch is a beast, I dont know if its cause hes more developed physically then other in his highlights or what but I have seen a couple youtube vids of him just absolutely power goals through, fighting through or brushing aside defenders etc. Looks like a work horse, and depending who is available when our pick comes up I would be willing to take him.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if we took virtanen looks like a beauty raw talent with size and flare, Both forwards are intriguing a long with a few swedes and Bleackley

I would be very content with this result, and then take a dman second round or BPA

tuuuuuuch

I agree with people saying we should take Honka if he's available. Last time I checked Virtanen is a projected early-mid 2nd round pick so we'll be lucky if he falls to us.

im truly not understanding where this logic is coming from. on css he is ranked 9th which is a bit of a drop, but youd think that would still be a first round pick. keep in mind jake after tonights game now has 30 goals!!thats tied for 2nd in the entire WHL, the only guy that has more is 20 years old. this kid has unbelievable talent and any team would be foolish to pass him up. I truly believe his upside is higher than even guys like Reinhart, with all the tools in his belt that reinhart will never have

Truly hoping we can make a trade in this shallow draft that sees us pick up both Virtanen and Tuch in the 1st round. Mattsson and or Mantha in the 2nd.

This shallow draft is the year to pick up an extra 1st and 2nd very cheaply.

Why do you agree just curious?

My opinion on Honka is that he is a risky first round pick, I dont know many defencemen in the NHL that are 5 ft 10.5 and are stars. The only elite level dmen I can think of 5 10 are kimmo timonen and tobais enstrom. I would think best case scenario he is as good as them? worst case scenario depth pp specialist. Or a Yannick Weber.

I dont want to write off a young top prospect based off height at all, I am just saying when we are at such an important time with our prospect pipeline we cannot afford to put a gap in it. And I think of him as small since everyone says hunter shinkaruk is small and hes a forward who is same height but heavier than Honka.

I just think he would be a risky pick, for all I know he could be the next Karlsson or timonen I dont know, but Im just curious why you think he would be our best option with our 1st rounder. Because i personally would prefer a F in the first round and then Dmen the next two picks.

And Virtanen was projected lower a month ago or on some peoples rankings, but hes been all over the place from 6-40

On most expert rankings he has gone from around 20+-> 11-18 range now.

We would be lucky to get him in the first round if we picked 20+ in my opinion.

About Julius Honka

He is one of the highest scoring D men in the CHL right now, and the telling feature is his +- is really good. He is genuinely defensively sound. A fantastic skater with either a solid first pass or an incredible burst of speed that leaves other players flat footed more often than not.

He broke into the WHL as a 5 foot 7 player and has obviously grown, to think he won't top out at 5 foot 11 inches or even the 6 foot mark is crazy.

One of the reasons I am so big on Julius Honka is Jordan Subban. Organizations scour the league and the drafts looking for genuine puck moving elusive and high scoring defensemen to pair with solid defensive blue liners.

Having Honka and Subban in no way guarantees that we have an NHL player in our system, but having 2 potential star PMD's as opposed to the none that 20+ other teams in the league don't have is incredible. We all know about the importance of a transition game and looking at this kid and our 2010 and 2011 system one can easily see why he'd be an interesting pick.

Again, having 1 PMD is great, but having 2 in our system would be a boon.

I also do not disagree as Honka will go early almost without question in the top 18 or earlier, that Virtanen and Tuch would be the best thing for our Org moving forward knowing our lack of depth at RW

I see what your saying, those are good points, I guess only time will tell, and depends who is on the board when we pick.

If Honka transitioned into the NHL as he is projected, he would bean amazing addition, its just the if part for me.

I think this draft a few years from now will really surprise all the so called "experts" and will be a lot deeper than they say.

People had some questions about how deep the drafts that saw Lucic/weber/subban picked in were after the first round as well.

We are picking much better in the later rounds so i for one am just as excited by our 2nd through 5th round picks as I am our 1sts

It indeed would, and we need to have 2 more drafts just like it where we keep all our picks and or add more in the 1st through 3rd rounds as well as our annual NCAA gem finding

People are very quick to want to sell or trade or write off our prospects. With Utica now in full swing our picks have places to develop.

what we will see if we can keep or add to our draft pick selections in the next 2 solid drafts and NCAA pick ups is a solid age range of players with a 4 year age and development gap shuffling in and out of Utica and Vancouver.

We will be bringing in new youthful players to develop with solid vets and 3rd and 4th year journeymen. It will give us an opportunity to actually develop players the way we need to instead of rushing or writing them off if they're not PPG players in the first 4 months of a season.

That being said we are almost redundant at our C position for depth and prospects, we now have to concentrate on our wings and our D and the first 3 rounds could be huge for that provided we can add another 1st 2nd and or 3rd round draft pick.

It could look like

Tuch, Honka

Virtanen, Mattsson

Mantha, Vanier

In our first three rounds if done right and with a shade of luck

And a quick check on those players at those positions will make truly knowledgeable hockey fans moist based on position skill set and size

Seems like a David Perron/ Alex Steen type of player. Would be a good pick up in 2nd round.

Again,

Honka, Tuch

Virtanen, Mattsson

Vanier, Mantha

If we somehow get our hands on those 6 players in the first three rounds....wow that would just be incredible

It will just be a dream picking up Virtanen now, its not going to happen sadly.

Round 2-5 will be where we find some gem Dmen I can feeeel it in my plums

If the canucks keep up this slump they just might be picking around 10th overall. At this point, I am hoping they miss the playoffs if it means picking this kid up.

yea once phx, detroit, clmbus and philly catch up in gp they will all four most likley be ahead of us in the standings, putting us from drafting 17th overall to 13th overall, if we keep losing Ottawa and Dallas and winnipeg are only 1-2 points behind, dalas being only 1 with a game less played.

All 7 of these teams pass us in the standings we will be drafting 10th or in that position very quickly, than many draft options are available to us:

Perlini and Virtanen have become possibilities, as well as Nylander, Kapanen, McCann and Fleury

We would get one of these 6 upper tier prospects.

I cannot see us doing worse than 8th overall, no matter what by worse I meen worse in the standings and lowering the pick any further than 8th.
