Master Mind
Down to the Final 4. My picks: Mario. Most iconic franchise and has done more for the industry than any other. I'm guessing Zelda will be Mario's toughest competition in this tournament, but I think Mario still wins it. Donkey Kong. Some of the best platformers have come from this franchise. Each DKC game is fantastic, I'm so glad Nintendo finally started making these games again. SSB is fun, but I just prefer DK. Alchemy Time
Was a tough choice between Mario and Zelda, Mario is by far the most iconic franchise of all-time, but in the end Zelda just has the better games. Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword and A Link to the Past would all be in my Top 15 favourite games of all-time, and Majora's Mask is my #1 favourite game of all-time. Because of that voted Zelda. Was an easy choice to vote Smash. Link to comment

Master Mind
How the hell did Donkey Kong make it this far? With a lot of nostalgic votes is my guess. It's a good series, but it should have went out a couple rounds ago imo. Link to comment

g_bassi13
You think that a game or two that came out a few years ago would challenge for the greatest franchises ever? Pretty much this. It shouldn't surprise anyone that a contest for the greatest franchise of all time has boiled down to those that have had the longest time to establish themselves. Though I have to say, even with the awesome idea it's based off of, and how much fun the games have been, I don't see how Super Smash should get into the final two. It was known from the start that Mario was going to win regardless, but I would have liked to see it get a better opponent in the finals. Link to comment

I agree with Super Smash Bros though, it's like, come on, really? Three of the final four are essentially in the same universe. Link to comment
Guest
Just because a series has been around for decades, doesn't mean it's better than a new series Look at Sonic for example, a majority of the new games have been poor. When was the last great Donkey Kong Game besides the Returns on the Wii? The Nintendo 64? Mario and Zelda belong here. Donkey Kong and Smash Bros don't. Edit: IMO anyway Link to comment
:D
Staying power is an important factor in determining a top video game franchise. It's how you can separate a game that is good, from one that just relies on the newest technologies to distract you. Link to comment

I was expecting EA to get there instead but if I would've known that EA would go out as early as it did, I would've set up the brackets so that maybe Zelda could meet Mario in the finals. Oh well, too late now. I'll include a final poll in the end on what franchise should have been second. Link to comment

It's how you can separate a game that is good, from one that just relies on the newest technologies to distract you. I think both of you make some good points. Being an established franchise usually means there's been good games being made over a long period of time, which will then often gain it extra votes. But in some cases, like DK and Metroid, a generation was skipped, but I don't think that makes either of them a lesser franchise. Then there's some cases like Sonic that are just riding on success from over 20 years ago, in those cases I'd vote in favour of a newer franchise. (As long as the quality is equal of course) Link to comment
GLASSJAW
Sonic got as far as it did because of weak competition, not because it's better than most of the other games in the tournament. Nobody in their right mind would deny that Sonic's success today is based on 2 or 3, maybe 4, early games in the franchise. I only voted for it because I didn't like the games it was up against, usually. Donkey Kong, though, was big in the 80s, HUUUUUUGE in the 90s, and just had a very well received game released for the Wii. I have no problem with him being in the top 3 or 5. Like I said before, outside of Mario, I can't think of a better platformer series that I played more than DKC. Link to comment
GLASSJAW
I do like a lot of modern series', too. Uncharted, I think, is amazing. But it, like many other new games, has zero replay value for me. Achievement unlocking is a cheap way to give the illusion of replay value IMO. DKC I *STILL* play, almost 20 years later. g_bassi13
Sonic has died such a strong death that a new Sonic game doesn't mean anything to most anybody nowadays. No series has been driven as hard into the ground as this one. The Donkey Kong name on the other hand doesn't carry the same connotations. After all these years, quality is still expected. That means something. With the upcoming Tropical Freeze, you just assume it will be great until it's unlikely proven otherwise Link to comment
