Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis says his team is not interested in acquiring a rental player or giving up one of their top prospects in a trade.

“We don’t like doing that [getting a rental player],” he told the TEAM 1040 on Thursday. “We’ve done it in the past, it hasn’t worked.

“We like players we think we can sign and keep that are going to be a long-term solution, not a short-term solution. Fitting those guys into your team in a meaningful way with three or four weeks left in the season is really difficult to do.”

Gillis is alluding to the success of the Chris Higgins and Maxim Lapierre acquisitions in 2011 and the subsequent failed Samuel Pahlsson and Derek Roy trades in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

“If we can address a need, we’ll definitely do it. But if it’s not there, it’s not there,” he added. ”We’re not giving away some of our young prospects that we have in a deal.”

This means the likes of Bo Horvat, Hunter Shinkaruk, Brendan Gaunce, and Nicklas Jensen are not available.

“We gave up a lot to get a guy like Bo Horvat. We’re not giving him up. I think he’s going to play in this league for ten-to-15 years without a problem and be a very good player.”

The NHL’s trade deadline is March 5, a week after the Olympic break, at 12 p.m. Pacific time.

Nice to see Gillis has come to his senses and is learning from his previous decisions. I'm more than certain the Roy deal last year was the last straw for him. Like it because you can't keep on giving up prospects and picks for temporary players - you need young development in order to have a successful organization, just ask Detroit who have been the blueprint for the league for decades now.

Great that MG won't rush anything and will only fire a deal if it's fair. Also, don't count out the Nucks making deals. MG specifically said this about rentals...he can still easily go out and get a roster player signed for more than 2 years if he likes which seems is unlikely but still possible. Basically, we most certainly won't be seeing a rental player coming this trade deadline. Safe to say MG is looking moreso at the future than the now.

Posted in the weekly Team 1040 thread in canucks talk. But this is a shade more detailed. No rentals, until the end of the 2014 season, until we've seen Schroeder, Jensen etc all actually play a full season in the NHL nobody should be trade bait who isn't already a roster player

Honestly not surprised. Why trade away what you've spent so long a time to accumulate (young talent)?

I do hope that we could make a run for Michael Ryder at the deadline though. His deadly shot makes him a difference maker when checking gets tough and the less talented guys get neutralized.

Gillis got a wash up in pahlsson who didn't even want to be here and gave way too much for Roy who was too soft. Lapierre and Higgins were strong deals at the deadline. Our cupboard is just starting to fill so don't blow it again if nothing comes up for a bonafide (BONAFIDE) pmd and top 6
