Despite not sending our best players, we still finished near or at the top of the standings at those Olympics. In fact, our worst finish was 6th in Lake Placid, during that span. Fighting for the bronze doesn't mean you are favored or "the top team to beat" (as you put it.) Canada and Sweden were in the 2nd tier of teams that usually battled for bronze. But the top team to beat in those olympics was the Soviet Union followed by the Czech team. Yes, if Canada could have used professional players, they would have been in the battle with the Soviets and Czech team... but that's playing the game of "what ifs" since they couldn't.
