Are we buyers or sellers at this years trade deadline?

I don't think you understand that the NHL is a business. Did Pittsburgh throw away Joe Morrow? From what I can tell Schero is a pretty good GM.

It's called a trade, you trade something to get something.

lol, please.

You can most definitely throw away a player in a trade. It's called making a trade for the sake of making a trade. It's an attempt at establishing some false hope in the fans and the team and that way the GM can also say he did his job. The Sharks did it with Ehrhoff and that wasn't even a deadline move. We acquired Roy last season. Good player. Was he going to put us over the top? Not even close. That is why I see it is a waste on our part. We did it with Weinrich, we did it with Carney. They instantly come to mind. Depth players, sure, but they completely sucked and in hindsight were also a waste of picks. Deadline deals rarely work and if we can't keep that player going into the season after then I'm usually against those trades. The Pens and Morrow is different because they were already jacked, already a powerhouse, they have better young talent then us it appears, so in that instance it made sense

This.

The folks who say stand pat or become sellers have no idea what they are talking about. Our future is nowhere near as good as the team is now. That would be an insane amount of wishful thinking to believe we will have 3 hall of fame players 2 who win scoring titles, one a franchise goalie and even another guy who can score 40 goals and win the Selke.

Just when do we foresee having that kind of talent again? Shouldnt we be trying to win when we have the talent?

Nobody is advocating trading Kassian or Horvat for a rental. Gillis will never go for that. However, moving Gaunce or Jensen for the right piece would be wise.

Or even our first in this weak draft.

Also, our defense is one of the best in the league with Garrison, Hamhuis signed for home town discount. We got alot of discounts for some guys.

But you can't say we won't have a team as good as right now because that is impossible to say.

ROR may turn out even better. Already outscoring em both at 22. Great all around player, similar size to Bo.

Even better then 2 Selke winners? Is he the next Toews? No? Kesler at 22 was on the 4th line working his way up the lineup Bergeron rookie season had more points then Reilly...2 years after is his career high 55 points Bergeron 2 years later had 73...so yes I want a Bergeron player not a Reilly

O and not to mention both Kesler and Bergeron were on good teams and while Reilly is finally now

I don't think we'll be very active this year, I think management is looking at next year for the prospects to make a push, Kassian / maybe Schroeder to be consistent contributors and for possible adds to our lineup via UFA - since the cap is going up by a large margin.

I would hope for a good hockey deal for a signed top 6 player that can be dynamic and exciting.

Personally, I see MG being relatively quiet as the deadline approaches. One thing to remember is that this team is one in transition from an offensive scheme to a more defensive system. Considering the talent we have and the extreme change of phylosophy, time is needed to see who s going to fit within it and who s not. I believe, for the most part, this is our team till the offseason where the hard decisions are going to be made and those deemed unsuitable for the style being implemented will be dealt or let go. I do have ideas for my wishlist, but that s for another post.

Can we seriously get checked for mental health before we post? Why the heck would MG trade for Horvat(9th pick) just to flip him in a trade? Horvat is an awesome prospect, tons of upside and exactly the kind of player you want for your future. Gillis did a lot of work to get him and said time and time again Horvat is off limits.

Yeah, because who wants to trade a prospect for a proven power forward who has a season where he has already scored 30 goals and is just 22.

I could see us picking up quality depth that has a realistic chance of re-signing or sticking with the team next season.

I see Devin Setoguchi, Vernon Fiddler, Steve Ott, Marcel Goc, Brian Boyle, and Eric Fehr potentially fitting into that category. There may be more.

Other than Setoguchi and Ott a 3rd round pick would be enough to acquire any of those other players most likely.

Are we buyers or sellers at this year deadline?

Have these player “On the market” during the trade deadline?

Edler – to a team in the east on the outside looking in and wanted to stock up on the blue line

Hansen- PK great 3rd liner works hard every shift to anyteam

Booth- to a team willing to take a gamble and for future considerations

Higgins – to a team that need a 2nd / 3rd line LW

Tanev – solid on defense as they come

We would get some good picks and prospects out of this (except booth)

If Gillis have bran he going after EVANDER KEAN he is yung he is from Vancouver he is want to play there , wort give prospect as well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Evander is what the team need badly

Gillis will need to do something at the deadline. We have done minor tinkering in the past and gotten us nowhere. If the playoffs started today, could we beat the Sharks/Kings/Ducks/Blues/Hawks 4 games out of 7? I don't think so... and until we can say that we can, we need to improve our methods and personnel

Buyers at this deadline and probably next year's deadline too. No significant pending UFA players to sell. The Canucks have all key players under contract until the end of 2015-2016 season.

So, Canucks will be small time buyers or perhaps pull off a hockey trade.

If... and a big IF .... we could actually get a star player in their prime - or even just slightly after their prime - at the trade deadline, then of course it would make a big difference, put us over the top, etc etc.

But you have to be willing to sacrifice the future to win now, and honestly that move should have been made the year we won our 2nd president's trophy, but it was obvious the team needed something more to really make a dent in the playoffs. But the problem was Kesler was hurt, DS concussed, so you aren't getting a better team anyways, so maybe management thought we had no chance... So I can understand why a move wasn't made at that point. Phalsson was a good gamble I guess, but not really a bold move.

The next year - Sedins into the playoffs on their worst slump in years - everyone realized the end is beginning... Kesler still injured but what else is new? Certainly that shortened season the team could really have used a top-6 sniper or a few beligerent playoff performers to help us - leave the refing stats out of this ;) Anyways, Derek Roy wasn't good enough. Again, not bold.

So that leaves us this year: Sedins definitely on downward trend - but I think we are all hoping that what we saw the first month will return come the playoffs... Kesler is back. Got some injury troubles, but not like last 2 years (aka relatively minor injuries, not a Sedin concussion and a perennial Kesler injury / recovery). But is the team good enough? The 2 years since the SCF appearance were the logical choices to go for it all while the team core is young etc... but they've lost something now. Could they get it back? Maybe they can start playing well again - but I think this team really needs that extra star to help push the team forward, and get that goal at least 1 in 3 games (ie. a 30 goal scorer) to help this team score their way out of their problems (which is all good teams ever do ;))

But it is hard to find a player of that caliber to get. And if you can't get that player, don't get a Phalsson or Roy, cause we already have those in spades. That year Hossa became available is a great example of that pick-up that makes a difference. Hossa went to the SCF 3 years in a row didn't he? or 3 of 4? You can say all you want about him not making a difference immediately, or so on and so forth... but he made a difference. I don't think there is a player to be had of that ilk at this deadline.

I agree with this. MG won't make any big moves because he needs more than one big move to make a real run. Anyone can see, and even the Nucks said, this was a transition year...

Now we were hoping some young players out of camp would make the jump Jensen/Horvat etc...but they aren't ready...result we are kinda stuck with a decent team this year but that likely wont make a run unless we get hot at the right time and add some size.

This is where i think mg can make some moves and tinker to see if we can make changes on the fringes that could make a slight difference in our chances.

With rumors of Ladd and Wheeler available those are two guys, that while are not stars would both be great fits here and add some sorely needed size, hands and grit...ie a 'lateral' trade where we dont blow up our present or future and a trade that benefits both teams might help us.

Morever, if you then wager that Horvat given his play this year can make the jump next, Corrado continues to improve, and Jensen can somehow find his game by next year, add in a healthy schroeds, and an improving kassian, what we wanted this year may happen next.

Add in the removal of Booth's contract and MG must sign a top 6 UFA with that money, and if we can make moves above to add two players like that well jesus we will be one hell of a contender next year...

my name says it all!

I posted this in another thread but seeing all of the Kane and Wheeler talk I think it is appropriate ehre as well

The problem is that Chevy is now on record stating he is not interested in picks or un proven prospects. This actually puts vancouver in a much mroe intriguing position.

If you think about it

Kassian

Corrado

Grenier

Tanev

Hansen

Stanton

Dalpe

Welsh

Jensen

Burrows

Lack

Archibald

These are all players with proven track records in either the AHL or NHL, of 1 season or longer. When you throw in say a few picks things become much more interesting

Theoretically one could say.

Hansen Shinkaruk Stanton/Tanev Jensen (switch out prospect A for prospect B or combo any way you want) and 2014 1st 2nd and 5th and 2015 2nd and 3rd for Wheeler Ladd or Wheeler Kane or even Kane Ladd (transition that to another 1st as well if you want.

This is a package of proven players, multiple picks and prospects as well as huge cap relief for the Jets in a solid UFA season for 2 players. A young hungry team gets younger and hungrier and vancouver gets much larger.

If the rumours are true this is much more in keeping with what Chevy wants moving forward with his team and much more palatable for the canucks moving forward, as it may be a large amount of pieces going to the Jets, it is near proven items under decent contracts coming back filling multiple holes that should have been addressed 2 seasons ago.

Again if rumours are true it is also more in keeping with Chevy's asking price than Edmonton offering pick and prospect X, Montreal offering the same etc. We might be the only team in the rumours with the actual roster players (our redundancy could prove beneficial?) to make such a large trade happen

Obviously it won't as I am sure we could all agree but those are the rumours as per Dreger and Mackenzie last night and a reason why the Pens cannot get something done

Edler and Higgins limited NMC's...not sure on Hansen don't believe so....Booth yes, he will be bought out no one wants him, even for a rbk 20k stick

Edler has a normal NTC, Higgins has a limited NTC and Hansen will have a modified NTC kicking in next season I believe.

Capgeek:

Limited and modified NTCs and NMCs simply mean the player's contract includes specific terms for the clauses, usually allowing the player to specify a no-trade list of undesireable teams or a trade list of desireable teams.
