Is it time for what seems to be considered taboo by most fans? (Rebuild)

Hey,

I just wanted to get your guys' take on a potential rebuild of this team from the core out. It is not an opinion just based on the slump that we have been recently, but the diminishing performance by our team since the 2011 run. There have been a few pleasant surprises this year (Luo playing decent and definitely better than expected, the team more willing to stand up for themselves in fights, Santorelli, Richardson), but it seems like our go to guys have been diminishing. It's been painful to watch.

Some people may use the term "retooling" but I think the problem goes to our core, and more substantial changes need to be made (similar to 2007). This roster has done well for us, and accomplished things our team has never done, except winning the cup.

While some people may suggest waiting, I'd rather that our team not do what Calgary did, and be a fringe team missing the playoffs for years before we accept the facts. I'd rather try to get some youth injected into this team immediately (more so than just Hunter, Bo and Gaunce), while we have some veterans than can guide them. Edmonton is a example that a rebuild may not work, so it's not a guaranteed recipe for success, but our core hasn't been getting it done. Can't remember the last time we won a game against a California team, and now that they are in our division, that lack of success against those teams just won't cut it.

Some people may not like Torts, but I think he will be a great guy for a rebuild. He can definitely get young guys committed and motivated, and I never liked AV's work with the younger players. I think the Sedins are done and have little chance of success with the rest of the team performing as they are. They could do wonders for a contending team that can surround them with (for a lack of a better word) better players and a team with decent puck-moving D-men in their roster.

Let me know what you guys think, and feel free to flame if you want (trolls really don't bother me), but this is just the opinion of a loyal Canuck fan.

Yea I just realized that. I've been off CDC for a while and I just noticed the exorbitant amount of threads on the topic. Last time I was at CDC, fans would get riled up anytime mentioned rebuild.

I apologize for the repetitive nature of the thread.

No worries, but judging by things lately I think most would say yes, at least 2 players from the core, top 6 or top 4 need to be moved.

Philadelphia did it and look at this http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=703214

they are much better off, have a young team, they need 1-2 more dman and some toughness and they are contenders

nj went all in when they had nothing for the following years, probably wanted to give broduer a good bye gift but didn't work.

boston even did a sight retool this summer

chicago reshaped they whole roster between their cups

ect... many teams come out better

send garry burrows, jensen hansen 1st to kane big buff

edler for ROR

Kesler for johansen, 1st

Kane ROR johansen

sedins kassian

sesito schroeder kassian

weise richardson lain

hamhuis tanev

big buff bieksa

There is a part of me that watched the team through the 80's and mid to late 90's and remember how bad we were that has hopes that we can somehow get a lottery pick and somehow net ekblad Bennet or Reinhart yet still be bad enough next year to get MacDavid.

Just so we can hear ALL of the collective fans in Alberta cry for the next 15 years about how they never got players of this calibre

:bigblush:

One can dream right?

Relying on our future to those little lottery balls? Not this hard luck franchise. Starting from losing and getting the 2nd pick for Tallon I can just see us coming up with the worst lottery placing in NHL history.

I have nightmares about that first lottery.

But I see there being a possibility of moving into the top 5 this year pre lottery and judging by rumours if there is enough of a shakeup (Kesler, edler, Luongo) and we rely on rookies and have injury issues. Anything is possible right?

Still. The tears of the Albertans would soothe me to sleep endlessly

How in the f*ck could you start this thread? LOOK AT THE F*CKING BOARD. How did the HF boards become better than here?

Like I said, I haven't been on CDC for a while and I guess most fans' opinion has changed. If you didn't like the topic, you don't have to post on it or read it, but losing your temper over a hockey thread (which is what I assume happened what with your CAPITAL LETTERS) is really pointless.

I'd be down for a tear-down, esp. if the team sinks enough in the standings to draft a young player who may already be mature and good enough to join the team (much like people hyped Horvat to be). However, if the team squeezes into the last playoff spot and the draft is weak I'd rather trade the 1st for a young player already in the league with potential if they're the B.P.A. (much like how M.G. passed on Howden to get someone else to help the team, except that someone better be better than Ballard), since that player would be more ready to contribute as part of the retooled team and they'd likely be on a cheap contract.

Yes, it's time to pull the plug on this group and rebuild. No, it's not taboo...or at least it shouldn't be. In a cap system, rebuild is virtually inevitable. But where I may disagree with most people is that a rebuild needn't take 4 or 5 years to see big results. Or 3 years. Or maybe even 2. What it takes is a decent cupboard of prospects, an astute GM (we need one of those) and a lot of cap space for July 1. The more cap space the better. Give a smart GM those things and he can rebuild pretty damn fast. The first step is to blow as many bad-value contracts out the door as soon as possible any way you can. That should be the goal for the rest of this year, but with Gillis in control, I doubt it will happen.
