-Vintage Canuck-
Here’s the official 2014 NHL Entry Draft order: On Monday, the NHL announced the official order for picks one through 30 at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, to be held in Philadelphia from June 27-28. Some notes about the order… – The first 13 picks were decided at April’s draft lottery, won by the Florida Panthers. The Panthers will select first overall; despite being a lottery team, the New Jersey Devils were given the 30th overall selection as an amendment to their punishment stemming from the Ilya Kovalchuk contract situation. – Anaheim gets Ottawa’s pick at No. 10 from last summer’s Bobby Ryan trade. – Tampa Bay gets New York’s pick at No. 28 from the trade deadline acquisition of Martin St. Louis. – The Islanders had to the option to send this year’s pick (No. 5 overall) to Buffalo as part of the Thomas Vanek trade, but opted to retain the selection and forward their 2015 first-rounder instead. Here’s the official list of picks: 1. Florida Panthers 2. Buffalo Sabres 3. Edmonton Oilers 4. Calgary Flames 5. New York Islanders 6. Vancouver Canucks 7. Carolina Hurricanes 8. Toronto Maple Leafs 9. Winnipeg Jets 10. Anaheim Ducks (from Ottawa Senators) 11. Nashville Predators 12. Phoenix Coyotes 13. Washington Capitals 14. Dallas Stars 15. Detroit Red Wings 16. Columbus Blue Jackets 17. Philadelphia Flyers 18. Minnesota Wild 19. Tampa Bay Lightning 20. San Jose Sharks 21. St. Louis Blues 22. Pittsburgh Penguins 23. Colorado Avalanche 24. Anaheim Ducks 25. Boston Bruins 26. Montreal Canadiens 27. Chicago Blackhawks 28. Tampa Bay Lightning (from New York Rangers) 29. Los Angeles Kings 30. -Vintage Canuck-
Rory Boylen of The Hockey News looks at the top five teams that might be considering trading their first round pick. 1. Florida Panthers at No. 1 – the first overall pick has been traded five times before, three times by the Panthers. 2. New York Islanders at No. 5 – they’ll be giving up their first round pick next year, so improving their roster for this season is important. If they find the right player, they could move this pick. 3. Anaheim Ducks at No. 10 – have one of the top ranked prospect systems. Are interested in trading for Jason Spezza and Ryan Kesler and might need to include a first round pick. This pick acquired from the Bobby Ryan trade with the Senators. They also have the No. 24 pick. 4. Philadelphia Flyers at No. 17 – need to address their blueline. There has been rumors that they could go after the first overall pick to draft Aaron Ekblad. They could also use this pick in a trade for another defenseman. 5. Tampa Bay Lightning at No. 19 and/or No. 28 – The Lightning also have two first round picks next season to go along with two Calder finalists this past season. They could use these picks to improve their roster this season.

Hunter.S-Kerouac
I'm no expert on these kids but from what I have seen... If we pick at 6 JV seems to be the player we need. Big scoring RW he's also born in October which makes him very young for this draft class almost 10months younger than many kids ahead of him or near his ranking. I wouldn't put too much stock in that. Most of the game is feel and repetition and training. With the right people to teach him his role he should have no problem transitioning to the nhl. -Vintage Canuck-
According to Arthur Staples of Newsday, the Islanders are open to trading their No. 5 pick at this years draft. “We’re open to trading the pick for someone we think can come in and help us right away,” Snow said recently. The Islanders need a backup goalie or two, a top pairing defenseman and a left winger to play with John Tavares and Kyle Okposo. Islanders GM Garth Snow called prospect Griffin Reinhart to let him know they won’t be trading him. Potential free agent targets could be: Marian Gaborik, Radim Vrbata, Jussi Jokinen and Thomas Vanek. On the blueline, options could be: Willie Mitchell, Matt Greene, Andre Benoit, Clayton Stoner, Mark Fayne and Mike Kostka. A significant upgrade to their blueline would need to come through a trade and not free agency.

I don’t see Vanek speaking to them unless he is paid an absolutely absurd amount of cash.

-Vintage Canuck-
According to Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Flyers need to start developing their own prospects, and appear to be on the right track with Shayne Gostisbehere, Robert Hagg and Sam Morin. The Flyers could use to prospects up front, which this draft appears to be deep on. “My philosophy is to draft the best player,” Hextall said. “Typically with these kids, you’re looking three, four, five, six years down the road before they’re going to make a big impact. Your team changes so much between now and then that to sit and say we need this position or that position” is irrelevant. If two players equal, Flyers scouting director Chris Pryor said they would lean towards the forward. Though they are likely not to be there at No. 17, the Flyers are high on Brendan Perlini and Kasperi Kapanen.
