Canucks Centre Mike Santorelli Ahead of Schedule in Recovery

How people think Hansen, and especially Richardson, have a spot on this team but Santo doesn't, is beyond me.

You don't have to look far.. here's an example of why he's not a "key " player, one of the most under appreciated canucks..

Under ideal circumstances, Horvat would fill the 3C slot next year, with Santorelli ready to take over if Horvat doesn't make the team. If Horvat does, then Santorelli moves to the wing. Under no circumstances is Santorelli a second-line player. I'm also not interested in contracts with any more term than necessary at this point. Offer Santorelli $1.5M on a one-year deal. Either way, he's not a key player in the Canucks future....just a pit-stop guy.

Another example same guy who answered my question why Santo is a "pit stop guy"..

Turns 29 later this year...not likely to be an impact player when the Canucks figure to be back to being a good team in 2-3 years. If the Canucks are going to be investing time in the likes of Horvat/Shinkaruk, Cassels/Gaunce (ie their high draft picks) in the 2nd/3rd line positions, you have to wonder where Santorelli will get his ice time, knowing it won't be at the expense of the the young guys. He's not a 4th line player, IMO. The influx of young guys will make him expendable sooner rather than later.

He's no less a fourth line player than Richardson.

Sign him for triple the salary, double the term. If Horvat/Gaunce/Jensen all make the team, move him for a draft pick.

This really isn't that difficult, is it?

What if he knows this and doesn't want to come back?

If Gillis says after the season is over that he is going to give prospects priority ice time to develop them, then Santorelli isn't going to accept minimal ice time on the 3rd/4th lines knowing that he's EARNED his ice time and at least a look for a potential top six spot. Nobody who has worked as hard as has is going to accept being bumped down the roster to make room for prospects for a rebuild. 29 other teams have seen that he played his ass off in all 49 games he played this year. By taking the UFA route he can CHOOSE the team he wants to go to as well as the term he wants instead of being dealt for a pick to who knows where.

A player like him would be looking for something like 4/5 years at 2.5m - 4m on a playoff team. Therefore, making him a cap casualty for the Canucks. Quite unfortunate since none of our prospects would have surpassed his production, with the exception of Jensen if he plays with the Sedins.

He found his groove with this team though for whatever reason. Plus this is home. Because of those two reasons, I doubt he would pass up the opportunity to continue to get his stats fired up for a big payday down the road.

Nice to hear Mike is on track with his road to recovery. Here's to hoping he's a Canuck this upcoming year...was our best player when healthy and was the spark plug to the team. No coincidence the team started losing when he was gone, a very solid player who I believe can be extended to a cheap contract granted a home town discount.

With the op on that one, and we'll wait and see in how things transpire in the off-season speculation doesn't really help at this point.. He already proven him self to be a versatile player and fill a variety of roles in the club and I agree with most of the posters here.

Thank you! At least someone actually understands his worth here in the canucks...

People seem to forget that Santorelli was sucking hard when he got injured... just something to keep in mind. He wasn't "our saviour," when he went down. He had like a goal or two in ten games and his minutes were being drastically reduced, probably because of poor defensive play.

Did it ever occur for you to read the previous post first before replying? Just curious..

Santorelli was holding steady at a .6 points per game. Think about that for a second. We lost him and our Goals per game dropped by .5~. He was a sure fire goal every two games... Be it him scoring or him setting it up.

He was a major part of the success in December

Honestly, his re-signing has a lot to do with any moves we make around the draft that might open up spots or close them. He's a bubble player for us vs a certain re-signing or likely UFA. He could be useful, but we might not have a spot for him if we do keep Kesler yet still want to promote from within.
