[Proposal] 2 Enforcers on the 4th Line Next Year

Recommended Posts

It's not like Torts ever uses the 4th line, might as well have 2 enforcers who can easily take down anyone (not Sestito, he just loses his balance and collapses in fights) and aren't afraid to break some rules. Put them between Richardson who's good at face-offs and can still be put on the penalty kill, so he'll still be useful. Have the 2 enforcers jump players who attempt cheap shots on the stars (e.g. Nino Niederreiter).

Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc6bJQwBXSc, just more effective. Also, the greater hope is other players won't attempt it, because Vancouver will have a scary 4th line.

This guy:

would be getting more than just penalties as punishment.

Probably a ridiculous idea, but it can't be that more ridiculous than the injuries this season.

Sestito would be fine as the secondary guy. I think Lain will get a shot to stick with the big club, and he can also provide some toughness.

Forgot about Lain, he did pretty good against Westgarth in the line brawl, might work out well.

Sestito - Richardson - Archibald

You got Richardson who can provide some offence and then you have Sestito and Archibald for the tough guy/enforcer role who can pot the odd goal (rhyming accidentally) every now and then.

IMO having your toughness on the 4th line has become a dead art and utterly pointless. If anything it only benefits opposing teams. When a player levels one of your players (dirty or clean) the enforcer has no intimidation. You just end up putting your worst line out against a more skilled line and give them a higher chance to score. Plus the opposing player just ignores the enforcer (why is he going to fight a player who serves no other value to his team) and if the enforcer does anything the opposing team just ends up on a power play.

Teams that are more known for being tough with somewhat of an intimidation factor have it built through players who hold significant roles on the team. Players who play along side the other skill players and players who getting off the ice actually serves a purpose to the opposing team.

When you have a player who gets lots of ice time and can play hockey that runs around leveling people they draw lots of penalties. When you have a scrub you keep pushing on the ice to chase someone who leveled your own players they end up taking the retaliation penalties.

What we need are talented players who don't need someone standing up for them. We need forwards like Iginla in his prime. We don't need to beat Lucic with his fists. We need players who will be punishing and clean body checkers, and can score at will.

As Jack Adams said to Gordie Howe. "I know you can fight, now show me you can you play hockey.".

The better maxim from Jack Adams is "You can't score from the penalty box". A team can be tough, and a pain to play against without having goons. In fact that might be more frustrating is facing a fast, young, big, talented team that will out hit you and out play you, and outscore you.

That one game, one player, changed the fortune of our season. Now Phoenix will make the playoffs and we won't. Hanzal is not a mean guy but a message needed to be sent. If I was the coach I would explicitly order Archibald to ACL Hanzal, not get Hamhuis to fight him.

There should be a provision in our contracts with 3rd and 4th liners that fined salary will be compensated by the club.

No need for goons, if our team would simply stick up for each other other teams would think twice about cheap shots. Look at the Colorado game, Kes was chirping with Duchene and then had to deal with Jaime Mac his following shift.

This team takes sooooooo many cheap shots, esp. Goalies and nothing is ever done. We send out Sestito to get beat up. How many games have we lost this year to injuries due to cheap shots?

Our team is not tiny but seems to play that way. Hansen used to play in your face, Garrison needs to play bigger, Edler gets pounded every game. I saw Kesler get hit in the Colorado game and thought to myself "oh oh, you just woke the beast" what happens........ Nothing.

There used to be a Canucks team that played with an edge and they went to the cup final. This team seems defeated before the second period. Little push-back. One of our strengths during the cup run was our FORECHECK. I watched the D-men brace for impact when ever Vancouver chipped the puck down low. Now they skate by the opposition rarely finishing hits and giving the other team time and space to exit their own zone.

No to just pure goons on the 4th line, those guys are a waste of space. I'd rather have the wingers be guys who are not only physical but who have potential to play bigger roles with more development, while the center's a good two-way guy.

Burr - Hank - Jensen

Daniel - Kes - Kassian

Higgins - Matthias - Booth (decent, play-driving 3rd line that can also hit)

I'd like to see this for the 4th
Archibald/ Mallet - Richardson/ Lain - Hansen
