The Jays had high expectations last year after landing Ra Dickey andJose Reyes in deals

They finished with a record of 74-88

They finished 5th in the AL East

Many say the team won't make the playoffs others say there's a slight chance that they might

That's why the GM made a few trades

He got Dioner Navarro out of free agency

Then released JP Arencibia later on

I just don't see their starting rotation getting them into the playoffs. Too many ifs. Can Dickey get back to everyday ace form? Can Morrow stay healthy and productive? Can Hutchinson be a reliable starter the whole season? Same for McGowan (or whoever slots in as the #5 guy this year). Jays need all 4 of those things to happen to have a chance of making the playoffs and I don't see that happening. 2 perhaps but not all 4.

The Jays are in a real tough division with

Yankees

Red Sox

TB Rays

The Jays have a good team, but I am not a big fan of Manager John Gibbons.

The Manager in Baseball has more control of what happens on the field than a coach in any other sport.

He calls pitches, defence, hit and runs, bunts, base stealing, makes lineup, batting order, pitching changes,

pinch hitters, etc.,etc.

The game and team is completely controlled by the Manager!

A Manager can be responsible for wins in at least 15- 20 games with good decisions in games, by the

same token he can cost a team 15-20 games with poor decisions.

So at the end of a season if a team is 8 games out of 1st, you could look at some decisions made by the manager during the season.

I think Gibbons is the weakest part of their lineup.

If he proves me wrong then I could possibly see a wildcard.

The Jays best chance of making it to the playoffs is to get out of the AL East.

Barring that, we can sit back and enjoy the first third of the season. By then, they'll probably be out of it and we can start to cherry-pick-watch the teams we think might have a chance.

So Dickey has a bad start his first game and a good start his 2nd. Hutchinson has a good start his first game and a bad start his 2nd game. I guess that means that Buerhle has a bad start his next game.

Dickey had a bad 1st start but bounced back quick

And I agree the Blue Jays should be moved to the NL or something I don't see them being 1st in the AL West except maybe in the Wild Card

some early concerns, even though they are 4-4.

Starting rotation is not good enough, not as strong as the other teams in the AL East. I expect decent years from Buerle and Dickey, as for the others guys its just wait and see.

its nice to see Milky and Bautista hit some long balls early, but i think the team relies on the long ball too much for runs. A lot of power hitters, but not enough get on base and move the runners around type of hitting. Maybe Reyes back will make a difference there.

If jays start tanking early, replace Gibbons. I dont know how he kept his job after last year.

What does management have against Kawasaki, hes a sparkplug, clutch hitter, and fan favorite, hes earned some playing time.

Those are my concerns but i still think it will be a better year than last year. The players have had time to find chemistry with each other now. Its also likely that they will be healthier than last year, barring a lot of bad luck. Im glad they upgraded at catcher too. Bullpen is still great.

They got Lawrie and no clue to why Kawasaki isn't getting any starts

In my opinion he deserves a shot

And always came up clutch in key situations

Another 7-5 win tonite

We got a clutch lineup this year so we don't know what we will expect

Just win

  • 1 month later...

Gose really reminds me the value of speed. If Gose and Lawrie can start hitting for a good average boy watch out..

Considering his start, Lawrie getting his BA above .240 is a good place to be by the middle of May. If he can hit .280 for the rest of the month then he'll be up over.250 to end the month. Not bad. He even seems like he's starting to wait on pitches a little more and finally drawing some BB too. I think that's the key indicator to his success, not power numbers or RBIs.

Reyes too, despite his poor avg is starting to be a major factor at the top of the order. As his avg climbs the Jays should start to be able to tack on a few more runs early in games. He's been getting quite hot recently. Hopefully Melky can stop cooling down at the same time.

All in all I think this team has the potential to go on a nice stretch if the starting pitching is even just average. The bullpen is getting itself sorted out now and the roles are being better defined. Having Janssen back, with Delabar setting him up, is huge.

I wonder which one of Gose or Pillar can hang around as the 4th outfielder after Rasmus comes back. Gose seems like his time is now and not having Bautista in CF makes a big difference. I like the fact that Colby can have 30+ HR power from the left side down in the order but he may be expendable for SP if Gose can hit well enough out of the 9 hole, and Pillar might be a good bench player with decent defense late in games. We know they can both field which is already an improvement over Sierra.

I'm starting to have concerns about Francisco. Seems he can't hit a breaking ball. Will be interesting to see how Boston pitches to him. I'm sure they know by now. Don't know if he'll be in the lineup today with Boston starting a lefty but as the series goes along I'll be watching to see if he can make adjustments.

Easiest way to fix baseball.

Hard salary cap. Kind of hard to be competitive when teams like Boston and New York spend almost 5 times what the bottom teams spend. You can also put in a minimum cap, forcing the smaller teams to field a competitive team.

He swings sometimes just for the sake of swining his bat. If he struck out less his value would be really really high..

Much needed. Yankees would have a hard wake-up call if this happened.
