Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz is in stable condition and is recovering after he was shot in a bar in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night, according to multiple reports.

Ortiz was shot at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo, and transported to a local hospital. According to the Associated Press, Ortiz was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle, approached him and shot him in the back at near-point-blank range just before 9 p.m. local time.

Ortiz was shot in the lower back, and the bullet exited through his stomach, according to ESPN. The 43-year-old reportedly told the emergency room doctor, “Please don’t let me die, I’m a good man,” before going into surgery.

According to Dionisio Soldevilla of Periodico Hoy, Ortiz is out of surgery and in stable condition. Ortiz’s father, Leo, told Soldevilla that he is now resting, no major organs were affected and a total recovery is expected. The Red Sox have offered Ortiz a private plane to fly him to the United States for further treatment if necessary, too, according to ESPN.

The suspect was captured and badly beaten by bystanders at the bar before he was arrested by police. He is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, according to the Associated Press.

Ortiz, who was born in Santo Domingo, played in the MLB for 20 seasons, most notably for the Red Sox. The 10-time All-Star led Boston to three World Series titles in 2004, 2007 and in 2013 before he retired after the 2016 season.

That looked like an assassination attempt to me. There's video evidence of the scene that is definitely not suited for CDC that showed the events. There's also videos showing the other people beating the living daylight out of the gunman.

So damn happy Ortiz is going to fully recover from this. Really hope he gets his family out of the DR and moves to Boston full time because clearly someone there wants him dead.

Boston Red Sox sending plane to pick up legendary slugger David Ortiz after he was shot in the Dominican Republic

The Boston Red Sox have arranged for a plane to fly legendary slugger David Ortiz from the Dominican Republic to Boston, said Sam Kennedy, the team's president and CEO.

Ortiz, 43, was shot in the back Sunday night and "the bullet went through his stomach," Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesman for the national police, told CNN. Kennedy said Ortiz's condition is serious, but he's stable enough to be flown. He will be taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, Kennedy said.

He remains in intensive care after being treated for bleeding in his liver and having portions of his intestines and gall bladder removed, said Leo Lopez, Ortiz's media assistant.

If hes a good man, whats the motive?

I dunno....you dont up and shoot a guy in the back in the middle of a group of people unless someones paying a lot of money.

Some people are just nuts, no reason needed other than that.

Edit to add

Mark David Chapman killed Lennon in front of people, no money involved.

We do not speak that troglodytes name.

You are right though, some people “just want to watch the world burn”.

*Cro Magnon got Lennon to sign an album earlier in the day, so while he was batsheet, i tend to think he was partly motivated by the prospect of fame, and also Lennon was on the radar of the CIA for speaking against the vietnam war at the time.

Story was, he was upset by Lennon's claim that the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus" and had an issue with Lennon's "lifestyle" (whatever that means)

He also said he didn't do it for fame of notoriety and refused interviews for several years to underscore that point.

Doesnt much matter at this point, but a guy killing someone famous for fame doesnt go around telling the world he did it for fame.

Its a moooooooooo point.

Correct, 400K worth, turns out it was 400K in Pesos, which is about 8,000 in US dollars.

Edit:

CORRECTION (June 12, 2019, 5:22 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article and headline misstated how much the people suspected of trying to kill David Ortiz were to be paid, according to prosecutors. It was 400,000 Dominican Republic pesos, which is closer to $8,000, not $400,000.

Bing-pot.

Whats their motivation though...

Turns out it was 400K pesos, so about 8,000 US dollars.

As for motivation, that's a good question, the only thing I'm thinking is something that happened in his past when he grew up there, someone I believe has a grudge against him still for something from the past, but again just speculating not really sure on motive.
