[Proposal] VAN-COL blockbuster + signings

Recommended Posts

Let's face it, I know I'm going to get flamed for making this proposal, but this team as it sits right now is no where close to being a Stanley Cup contender. They may be a playoff contender, but not a Cup contender, and I'm thinking that it might be time for a total reboot while trying to stay competitive at least.

Trade #1 (VAN-COL): Canucks trade C Ryan Kesler, D Alex Edler, LW Chris Higgins, and LW Tom Sestitio to the Colorado Avalanche for C Ryan O'Reilly (RFA rights), LW Jamie McGinn (RFA rights), LW Cody McLeod, and their 2014 1st round pick.

Why?: In the event that Paul Statsny does not re-sign with the Avalanche combined with the immense cap room they have, I could see the Canucks pulling such a deal with bringing in Kesler, who along with Matt Duchene would make a great 1-2 punch down the middle. He may also play the right wing if the 1-2 punch in the middle winds up being Duchene & Nathan MacKinnon, and a potential #1 line would be Landeskog/Duchene/Kesler. Edler bolsters a young blueline with a lot of potential that includes Erik Johnson, Jan Hejda, Ryan Wilson, Tyson Barrie, and Andre Benoit (the latter two I could see re-signing with Colorado) with Nick Holden and Nate Guenin as depth options for Colorado. Higgins I can see playing on a line John Mitchell and Max Talbot, while Sestito would provide extra grit with Patrick Bordeleau. For the Canucks, O'Reilly becomes the #2 center behind Hank, and with the way his offense has improved the last few years would make a welcome addition to the team. Canucks would also get the RFA rights to McGinn, who like O'Reilly, has improved offensively, and McLeod who would make up for the loss of Sestito with some toughness. Canucks get an extra 1st round draft pick from the Avalanche, while after the trades the Avalanche still have loads of cap room.

Trade #2 (VAN-PHI): Canucks trade G Jacob Markstrom to the Philadelphia Flyers for their 2014 7th round draft pick.

Why?: Flyers only have one goalie under contract for next season, why not get a younger guy like Markstrom to back up a veteran like Steve Mason? In the process, the Canucks get a late draft pick to keep stocking the cupboard down the road.

Buyout: LW David Booth (despite having a decent second half he's materialized into a disappointment and a change of scenery just might be what the doctor ordered)

RFA signings: C Ryan O'Reilly (6 years/$5.5 million), D Chris Tanev (3 years/$3 million), LW Jamie McGinn (3 years/$2.85 million), RW Zack Kassian (2 years/$1.95 million) D Yannick Weber (1 year/$715K), C Zac Dalpe (1 year/$625K)

UFA signings: G Jaroslav Halak (4 years/$4 million), RW Radim Vrbata (4 years/$3.5 million) UTIL Mike Santorelli (2 years/$1.55 million)

Markstrom is talented enough to deserve much much more. Though I am not quite sure why you are so keen on throwing him away.

Also Colorado is the last team that would trade for Kesler. If Statsny makes it to UFA they can always move O'Reilly back to center or maybe even move MacKinnon there. Not a very well thought out thread at all.

Not gonna say I don't love ROR, and Mcginn is a good player too, but really? You want to move our top two trade chips for that? For me, Colorado would have to throw in more. At least another draft pick or two, or a strong prospect. Not a fan at all. And Markstrom has a world of potential if he can find himself. Moving him for a 7th is asinine.
