I have been longboarding for 25 odd years, grew up in North Van and have literally never stopped. I have participated in some pretty dumb stunts in my time and I have physically paid a price to do so between skate/snow/biking. I came across this article and I have mixed emotions. Am I getting so old that I have lost touch? I hate where that Pi... errrrrr Police Officer decided to stop his car, but at the same time, those dudes need to find a better place to downhill. I'd love to hear some different perspectives on this. Watch the damn video before posting how much you hate or love longboarding please.

I agree. They do need to find a better place. They are going so fast and are so small that it would be easy for someone to not see them and pull out right in front.

As for the police, I am not sure what he was supposed to do in that scenario. If he had stayed in his own lane, would they have just blown past him? You have been long boarding, would they have stopped? It appears he pulled into their lane with sufficient time for them to stop, although it looks like it took a fair bit of effort to do so.

Yea, that cop is quite the hero saving lives, gimme a break. Two wrongs don't make a right. Look how confrontational that cop gets, he clearly is mentally unstable. Yet this is who we employ to protect our streets, anyone with a pulse. And people wonder why cops get such a bad rap. Whats a matter bro, no one to taze that day?

here is a scenario

what if those longboarders continue down the road and the cop follows them waiting for them to stop what if they don't stop and just try to outrun the cop crossing 4 ways and wind up hitting a car or something else because they couldn't stop

the cop was wrong and right in the same instance it was better he stopped them there then trying to stop them down the road that could of ended worse

It seems like the cop is just frustrated. Mentally unstable is a bit of a hyperbole.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for the longboarders. Longboarding is illegal in West Van, so they shouldn't be there in the first place. It appears to be a public, residential street, and what they're doing is dangerous and inconsiderate to others. The fact that they have so much trouble stopping speaks to that.

How about learning some respect for the people who make your life safer on a daily basis?

For comparison, we (my hardcore skater posse and me...lol) would board down Mt Seymour with very little traffic and would stay away from busy areas. The Ranger would pull us over by flashing his lights behind us and we would carve to reduce speed and foot drag to a stop which does take a fair distance. I can recall being escorted by the Park Ranger down the hill and I can't recall ever having a confrontation with him or the RCMP during the few times they were called in. I doubt the dudes in the video would have bolted but I really hate that they are ruining the sport for those who exercise common sense. I also hate that the cop decided to act with some rage fulled piety that endangered everyone.

I used to live in that area in WV, and it was SUPER annoying to have longboarders shoot down the hill past you like that, especially with all the blind corners and winding roads in WV. I have no sympathy for them, but I can still say that the cop shouldn't have endangered them like that. Yeah yeah, it's illegal, but I saw absolutely no justification to put them at risk for injury/death like that (especially with an oncoming car behind him as well).

I don't think anything should come of this (aside from tickets to the longboarders), but next time, I'd hope the officer would take a more conservative approach, and try signalling a pullover by following them down the hill first. None of them attempted to run, so I'm sure they're all reasonable people who would have pulled over.

As usual, the guy breaking the law tries to turn it around and blames the cop. It's called the shame and blame game and a lot of ppl try to use this method when they're in the wrong. If one of these boarders slams in a car and gets killed, who gets blamed?

Longboarders

Majority of them are seriously lacking in any sort of common sense. These guys definitely fit that bill.

As for the cops actions, better he force them to swerve off of the road than get creamed by some other car. Given where the location they were doing it, that was definitely a possibility.
