More than 280 people, many of them students from the same high school, were missing after a ferry capsized off South Korea on Wednesday, in what could be the country's biggest maritime disaster in over 20 years.

The ferry was carrying 462 people, of whom 174 have been rescued, coastguard officials said. Four people were confirmed dead

Wow couldn't imagine be a parent of one of the kids on board.

So many unaccounted for is crazy.

North Korea has over 40 active Sang-O class submarines with a range of 2800 kms. They have multiple torpedo tubes and can easily take out an unguarded civilian ship.

interesting thought , but i hope if anything it was just a freak accident esp with so many kids on board

They aren't great subs, are rarely seen away from the border, and the waters are heavily guarded. Possible, but not very likely.

..... The ship flipped over. It capsized. It hasn't sunk. Submarines do not flip giant ferries over.... they blow it up or sink it.

It could've been a terrorist attack.

This is just so sad. Seeing the news and some of the last texts the passengers sent before they passed away, it's just so depressing.

"Incase I don't have another chance, I just want to say I love you mom".

"For anyone I've ever wronged, please forgive me".

:( :(

RIP to all on board. This is truly tragic.

of the 46 life boats, only one was deployed.

Heard on CBC, while driving, that early reports indicate ferry staff told people to wait in their rooms during the ordeal, thereby leading to few evacuees.

Crazy if true.

It really does sound like a botched evacuation is what will ultimately be responsible for a large death toll.

1. Before sailing let passengers know what to do in an emergency... specifically point out the muster stations

2. When an emergency takes place move passengers to muster stations (even if only a precaution)

3. Prepare the lifeboats/rafts (again, even if only a precaution)

4. When the order is given fill lifeboats and launch them. If it is impossible to launch boats or if you don't have boats, launch rafts.

It sounds like the command crew on board lost their heads and forgot to declare an emergency when the first sign of trouble occurred. They were probably just commencing steps 2 & 3 when they should have been on step 4. Not to mention telling people to stay where they are is mind boggling...

A question for everyone, when you ride a BC Ferry do YOU check were the rafts and lifejackets are? You dam well should. 2 minutes of prep could save your life.

i have been on 1 ferry and i didn't even leave my truck, it was just a highway ferry crossing but still i never even thought about it at the time. i guess chances of something happening while crossing a lake in 15min are a lot smaller then boating in an ocean over a much longer time..

All the texts are fake, according to a specialized cyber police unit...

People are disgusting. First with all the MH 370 "sightings" and now this. I cannot see how one can do these things and not realize the psychological harm they cause everyone personally involved.

The fake texts are those being sent after the incident. There were certainly texts being sent during the whole ordeal and they'll use the times sent to bust the crew for dooming the passengers and jumping ship before others.

This article and the coverage in the west is very poor. For something with this much urgency and uncertainty, I'd think the media would try to be on their best game.

apparently the captain has been arrested and charged, and on a sad note apparently the teacher of the students on board who escaped with his life has killed himself due to the guilt of being responsible for the kids that died.
