Strombone1
RUMORED CANDIDATESJIM BENNING Iain MacIntyre @imacVanSun Still believe Benning is #Canucks' 1st choice. But Hextall, with mgmt dues paid under good GMs,would be interesting candidate. News1130 Sports @News1130Sports Benning said the #Canucks job would be an exciting opportunity but can not comment on the Vancouver job because he works for another team. QUALIFICATIONS Following his playing career, he served an amateur scout for the Anaheim Ducks (1993–94) and then joined the Buffalo Sabres as a scout (1994–98) and as Director of Amateur Scouting (1998–2004). In the summer of the 2006, he became the assistant GM of the Boston Bruins. His name was included on the Stanley Cup for the 1st time with the Boston Bruins in 2011. Boston Bruins also won the Presiden'ts Trophy in 2014. He's paid his dues with 2 solid organizations as the #2 guy. Has a ring. #canucks “I do want to be a general manager,” Hextall told NHL.com in July. “I talked to (Flyers GM Paul Holmgren) about that when we talked about this job. If something else becomes available, I at least want to look at it. He was absolutely fine with that.” QUALIFICATIONS Upon his retirement from playing in 1999, Hextall immediately joined the Philadelphia Flyers' set-up as a Professional Scout. He was promoted to Director of Professional Player Personnel three years later, and was considered by the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame to be a key factor in the success experienced by the Flyers during the early 2000s, when they won the Atlantic Division three times, and reached the Eastern Conference Finals on two occasions. In June 2006, Hextall moved to the Los Angeles Kings to take on the role of Vice President and Assistant General Manager. In addition, Hextall served as the General Manager of the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL, the Kings' primary affiliate. On June 11, 2012, Hextall won the Stanley Cup that eluded him in 1987 and 1997, this time as the Assistant General Manager of the Los Angeles Kings. On July 15, 2013, Hextall returned to the Flyers, being named Assistant General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations. wallstreetamigo
Either would be a great candidate for GM imo. I would be happy if either of them got the job. I just hope the Canucks don't go off the board like they did with Gillis.

awalk
Could someone explain to me why benning is such a favoured candadite? I honestly don't know. Could be simply because there have been a lot of positive spin articles on him lately, and people generally just follow that kind of info (see: Dallas Eakins last summer) But also it's the fact that he has an impressive resume, seems to be a good classic "hockey guy" and comes from one of the best-run teams in the league as a successful assistant GM. Experience + Results = good candidate. But I don't know enough about him to really judge.

Experience + Results = good candidate. But I don't know enough about him to really judge. He was a former scout. That's a huge part of his resume considering where this team is at. He's responsible for guys like Marchand and Lucic with Boston. And guys like Miller, Gaustad, Roy, Pominville, Paille, Wideman, Ballard, Vanek, Hejda, MacArthur, Stafford, Sekera, and Kaleta as the director of Amateur scouting for the Sabres.
