TheRussianRocket.
http://www.mynhldraft.com/nhl-draft-picks/6th-overall/60509/Here is a list of NHL draft picks who were 6th overall draft picks in past NHL drafts. 2013 - Sean Monahan 2012 - Hampus Lindholm 2011 - Mike Zibanejad 2010 - Brett Connolly 2009 - Oliver Ekman-Larsson 2008 - Nikita Filatov 2007 - Sam Gagner 2006 - Derick Brassard 2005 - Gilbert Brule 2004 - Al Montoya 2003 - Milan Michalek 2002 - Scott Upshall 2001 - Mikko Koivu 2000 - Scott Hartnell 1999 - Brian Finley 1998 - Rico Fata 1997 - Daniel Tkazcuk 1996 - Boyd Devereaux 1995 - Steve Kelly 1994 - Ryan Smyth 1993 - Victor Kozlov 1992 - Cory Stillman 1991 - Peter Forsberg 1990 - Scott Scissons 1989 - Adam Bennett 1988 - Scott Pearson 1987 - Dave Archibald 1986 - Vincent Damphousse 1985 - Brad Dalgarno 1984 - Craig Redmond 1983 - John MacLean 1982 - Jim Benning 1981 - Paul Coffey Looking at the track record of players chosen 6th overall, it's safe to say it's a hit or miss zone for the most part. Either you get lucky and draft a gem or you'll go home with broken goods. Few times you get an average guy though those guys aren't busts but still not worthy of being picked where they were. We won't be drafting a dman that early with our pick with the lack of top end D talent early on unless Ekblad drops lol. It's unfortunate because there have been 6 dmen picked and there is a high success rate with them compared to the other positions. 4 turned out to be worth it (Coffey, Benning, Ekman-Larsson, Lindholm) while just 2 busted (Redmond & Bennett). A 65% you land a keeper dman, those are some likeable odds. We also won't be drafting a goalie 6th so that leaves it at a forward plus the 2 goalies picked have both been busts. Seeing the picks, it's a majority mix between hits and misses and then some average players. Notable worthy forward picks have been Damphousse, Forsberg, Stillman, Kozlov, Smyth, Hartnell, and M.Koivu. Notable busts include Brule, Filatov and Fata. Players that turned out to be not worthy also not busts (average) are Michalek, Upshall, and Gagner. As you can see, these are the facts and reality is we have a hit or miss chance too. Here's to hoping we get a worthy pick and stay away from a bust and an average player. A worthy player would be more than enough. With JB here, I hope he's doing his homework and ensures we get a player that'll leave a lasting legacy. Also, this is the first time the Canucks will pick 6th. Let's hope we make it count
Jägermeister
Not a single decent player from 95-99. It has looked a lot better recently. Only Filatov, and Connolly didn't live up since 2006, and there is still some hope for Connolly.
Nuxfanabroad
Hit & miss. Is that Archibald from Chilliwack? Back in mid-'80s, played some games against him.
Absent Canuck
Rico Fata
TOMapleLaughs
So, yes to Damphousse, Forsberg, Stillman, Kozlov, Smyth, Hartnell, and M.Koivu. No to Brule, Filatov and Fata. ?

Brendan Gaunce
Monahan had an outstanding rookie year. He will be a great pick.
Mathew Barzal
If we could draft a Sean Monahan I'd be so happy. But yeah, looking at that list is a little scary, especially considering this draft has been labelled as a weak one.
Tom Sestito
Looking in this millennium, it's interesting. Most of these guys are 2nd line material, or were at some point in their career.

Watermelon
Nylander will be a beast and if we pass up on him , we'll regret it in a few years
Herberts Vasiljevs
Seems hit and miss. Still a great chance and getting a solid NHL'er imo. Ehlers, Ritchie and Nylander all look to be great picks if no one from the top-5 falls.
5nothincanucksohno
Just one more reason why they should trade down to for multiple picks. Not a lot of high end talent in the draft but good depth.

Either you get lucky and draft a gem or you'll go home with broken goods. Few times you get an average guy though those guys aren't busts but still not worthy of being picked where they were. They've both been consistent ~0.6 PPG over their entire careers. I think you're expecting a little too much.
