Johnny Manziel drafted by San Diego Padres in 28th round of MLB draft

I didn't even know this guy played baseball. PR stunt? I know many college athletes get drafted in multiple sports leagues, but this one surprised me.

NEW YORK—Just call him Johnny Baseball.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round of the Major League Baseball draft Saturday — the 837th player taken. Manziel was listed as a shortstop for Texas A&M, although he never played for the Aggies as he focused on football.

Manziel, the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012, was taken by the Browns with the 22nd overall pick in the NFL draft last month.

“Big thank you to the @Padres and @padresmikedee for selecting me in the MLB draft,” Manziel wrote on his Twitter page. “What a great day!”

Dee, the Padres president and CEO, tweeted back: “Best athlete on the board . . . #JohnnyBaseball.”

Manziel played baseball and football at Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, and asked Texas A&M coaches about being part of the baseball team before winning the Aggies’ starting quarterback job as a redshirt freshman.

Earlier this week, Manziel — decked out in an Indians jersey — was set to throw out the first pitch in Cleveland before the Indians played Boston. His toss was washed out by rain that delayed the start.

But, in May, Manziel took batting practice with the Padres at Petco Park and tossed out a football-style first pitch as he dropped back, scrambled to the side of the mound and floated a bootleg “pass” to San Diego outfielder Mark Kotsay, who caught it behind his back with his glove.

On Manziel’s first swing in batting practice, the bat flew out of his hands, but he settled down and later drove a pitch off the right-field wall.

Maybe Johnny Manziel, Bo Jackson & Michael Jordan,... will all have MLB stints in common, while primarily being known as All-Stars in different professional sports. That would be something ...if Johnny could put himself in the company of those other two, eh?

I see your point although Jordan never did too much in baseball. Never made the big league. I'd add Deion Sanders cause he was an all star in both sports along with Bo.

Won't ever play baseball but not much players selected that high do. Why does MLB have so many rounds of drafting?

I haven't watched baseball lately but it's the hardest sport to develop in. No one makes the bigs out of the draft and each team has numerous minor leagues teams in AAA, AA, A, and R leagues. Takes a lot of players to fill up all those teams.

Thanks for clearing that up. Never really followed baseball and other sports usually have 7 rounds, so was curious

Pretty sure Neon Deion was never an allstar in MLB.

You're probably right but he was a decent player and lot better than MJ who never made the bigs. That was my point. Plus I'd bet he would of been an all-star if he wasn't also busy with his HOF football career.

No problem. Though the MLB draft is very different from other sports and to truly understand it requires a slight effort in doing some research. I never truly bothered to figure out all of its loops personally but it is interesting.

Like a player can be drafted twice. Chase Utley for example was originally drafted by the Dodgers out of High School but he didn't sign and he went to play in college at UCLA. Then he was drafted 2 years later by the Phillies. Then in addition to the normal draft they have a Rule 5 draft which allows teams to draft players in other teams systems that have been around 5 years I believe but haven't seen MLB action. But then after a while they can offer the drafted player back to the team if they don't want them I think.

I really don't understand it myself xD But it's a sophisticated system when compared to other leagues.

The NBA draft is the opposite. I believe it is only 2 rounds long. Though they have no minor league and the roster itself is only about 15 players I think.

Considering the subject matter Russell Wilson would have been a better example. He's been drafted twice and was aquired by Texas last year in the Rule 5 draft.
