[UPDATED] Invites to Canucks 2014 Prospect Summer Development Camp

Recommended Posts

UPDATED: July 2nd, 2014

So apparently the camp opens within days and still nothing official from the team. They've been late in the past but I can't remember them ever leaving things this late. According to one of the invitees, the summer prospect developement camp will be starting this week. And yet there's no schedule or dates listed on the official website.

Hopefully there's a press release today or tomorrow (including the full list).

Until then, here's an update:

4 more players have been added to the list (sorry for not updating this until now):

Troy Stecher (D): http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=87213529&postcount=14

Troy Stecher @troystecher · Jun 28

Really excited to attend my hometown team the @VanCanucks development camp next week! #Hometown

Daniel Ciampini (F): http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=87249811&postcount=15

Austin Lotz (G): http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=87249811&postcount=16

Austin Lotz @lotzy30 · Jun 28

Extremely excited to be joining the @VanCanucks for development camp in a week! #childhoodreamteam

Michael Garteig (G): http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=87350185&postcount=26

I've just linked the posts from HFBoards Canucks for the time being. I'll try to post some scouting reports and bios later in the thread.

Really surprised that there's been nothing released on the official website. We're days away from the camp opening (see Austin Lotz' tweet) and I can't find an official release (or full invite list) anywhere.

ATTENTION MODS: Please feel free to edit or update this post/thread. There should be an official release from the Canucks coming soon (and full invite list and camp roster). I'll try to keep things updated.

ORIGINAL POST:

There have only been two invites reported so far but I figured we needed a place to list and discuss these players.

I couldn't find any current CDC threads on these invites. Please delete if this is redundant.

HFBoards has a good thread on the league-wide invites: http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1680553

Their Canucks listing also confirms the two players I've mentioned here.

(1) Curtis Valk: http://whl.ca/roster/show/id/685

This was reported a while back via Twitter by https://twitter.com/KThakur20 and https://twitter.com/krufrank (I can't find the original tweets right now but I linked them in a post a few weeks back).

There's still a little doubt (in my mind at least) as to the validity of these reports (and the sources). I'm a little surprised that I couldn't find anything in the mainstream press (especially out of Medicine Hat) that has picked-up on the story as Valk is a relatively prominent name in the WHL. For the time being, I suppose I'll call this one a "rumoured" invite.

Valk replaced the injured Hunter Shinkaruk as the Tigers' captain this past season. The 93-born overager has put-up back to back 90+ points (45+ goals) seasons in the WHL. As an undrafted CHL free agent, he's hoping to earn a pro contract. There has been some chatter that the Canucks are already leaning toward offering him a deal but want to get a close look at camp first.

Interestingly, Valk is a family friend of Willie Desjardins (and yet another Medicine Hat connection).

He's undersized (5'9", 170 lbs) but he plays a scrappy style and is undeterred by physical play and willing to get to the dirty areas. He also brings a lot of skill and offensive ability. He's been leaned on more heavily by the Tigers over the past couple seasons (playing more minutes and a larger role) and has shown the ability to be pretty durable (only missing one game over the past two seasons). He's also very capable playing in all situations (centred the Tigers' first line, played 1st unit PP, and killed penalties).

He attended the Blues' rookie camp last year and he was the #82 NA skater on the 2013 CS final rankings.

Here's a pretty good article from earlier this year: http://softmittsheavyhits.com/2014/03/whl-overager-spotlight-curtis-valk-medicine-hat-tigers/

Valk also received a little discussion on these boards a while back: http://forum.canucks.com/topic/359884-curtis-valk-for-ahl-tryout/

(2) Klarc Wilson: http://www.whl.ca/roster/show/id/419

This was reported more recently and has much better sourcing (as Wilson has confirmed it himself on his own Twitter): https://twitter.com/wilson_oh9/status/480096638942199808

klarc wilson ‏@wilson_oh9
Excited and privileged to be able to attend the @VanCanucks development camp #reachforit

And yes, that's how he spells his first name. ;)

Klarc Wilson is a hard-nosed, physical winger who was a regular staple on the Oil Kings' "crash-and-bang"/shutdown line with Rhett Rachinski and Jordan Peddle before getting traded to Prince George midway through the 2012-13 season. Until the 2013-14 season, Wilson was a fairly low scoring forward who was dependable defensively and counted on to bring energy and physicality to his game every night.

He has good size at 6'1", 206 lbs and he's shown a willingness and aptitude to drop his mitts whenever called upon (15, 14, and 13 fighting majors in 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13), and has built a reputation as one of the tougher customers in the WHL. This past season, his last in junior, he's chosen to try to score more goals than knockouts (although he's still been quite game when challenged), and his totals jumped to 27 goals and 60 points (after a previous best of only 8 goals in 2010-11 and 25 points in 2011-12).

Wilson has built a strong reputation for his commitment to fitness and strength training, having tested "off the charts" at the Cougers' training camp.

He's attended two NHL training camps on tryouts, one with the Jets (2012) and the other with the Rangers (2013).

Like Valk, Wilson is an undrafted CHL free agent who's looking for a pro contract. He's also 21 years old and has finished his junior career.

Here's a good recent article on Wilson: http://www.princegeorgecitizen.com/sports/wilson-is-bad-santa-to-his-whl-opponents-1.1031339

Cool, thanks for the info. Summer camp is always exciting, and I'm happy there's fewer invites this year, it means we're finally filling out our prospect pool with our actual draft picks. Both are intriguing players, and maybe we'll see some Valk/Shinkaruk chemistry during the scrimmage.

Good info. Had heard about Valk, but not anyone else. I'll be watching this to see who comes (not just invites, but existing Canucks prospects too!) and the chances each has and how they do.

As far as Wilson, it looks like he really took off this year with the Cougars putting up 60 points in 72 games. Maybe he was used in a larger role than he had been with the Oil Kings, but he was also an overager from the looks of it. In any event, it's better than the combined 26 points in 71 games the previous season for both the Oil Kings and Cougars. Worth an invite as another potential bottom 6 guy that could really excel.

Valk I feel is a little too far of an outside chance for an NHL regular, but he could certainly be another player like Friesen for us in the minors. Not to sure how he'll develop though, so that's a wait and see.

I was reading along about Valk, thinking WTF? Why wasn't this guy drafted?

Then I got to the part about his size.....

I know nothing about the guy other then what I just read, but It seems strange to me a player that good (If he is) wouldn't be taken in the later rounds,

But yeah, I guess Trev wants his Ronning,

Schreoder hasn't worked out thus far so...onto the next 5'9 center.

I think we should get our invites on AHL contracts and see how they do as they come into their first pro season.

Doesn't the Canucks home page show who we invited to summer development camp?

KThakur20 isn't a valid source, he's like the VC of twitter, he just grabs other people's rumors and passes them on as his own. the only difference is VC usually provides his source.

Agreed, look at his tweets.

Good luck to @MilesKoules who is off to @washcaps camp this summer and former captain Curtis Valk is off to @VanCanucks camp!! Congrats!
Here's the best source for Valk.

Looking at Daniel Ciampini's stats, it's hard not to get excited about the guy. Like, Valk, I could see him being an early frontrunner for scoring a contract out of the Rookie Camp... sort of like how Ronald Kenins got his contract with the Canucks last year after the rookie camp.

Ya, they usually do camp a week after the draft. I'm looking forward to the scrimmage, it's not great hockey but at least it's hockey in July.

anyone care to take a stab at scrimmage lineups?

Shinkaruk - Horvat - Valk

Blomstrand -Cassels - (Myron?)

Petit

McEneny - Tryamkin

Liberati - Stecher

Stewart

Demko*

Kenins - Gaunce - Fox

Zalewski -McCann - LaBate*

Mallet

Cederholm - Subban

Forsling - Williamson*

Mcnally*

Garteig

That was hard. Fair you think? Sucks that Virt is injured, or else I would think we'd have 4 offensive lines split between 2 teams.

Asterisk indicates University players, who would have to pay their own way in camp (if they come).

Is Myron even our property anymore? He seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

I think you're right, 2 years since being drafted and no contract. I'ts why I had his name as a question mark, I'm not even sure he's playing pro hockey anymore. Maybe replace him with Ciampini.

I forgot Hutton, It'll be good to see where he's at if he pays his way from Uni.

He played with the K-Wings for a bit last year, but I don't think we had anything to do with that. Tryamkin is also a question mark, Linden said (I think) that they were working trying to get him a visa in time to come for the prospects stuff.
