Bure to Mogilny
TOEWS, KANE MAKE INITIAL ASK TO BLACKHAWKS FOR EXTENSIONS TSN.ca Staff 6/26/2014 11:24:06 AM Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane appear to have made their initial ask to the Chicago Blackhawks on a contract extension and are hoping to join the NHL's highest paid players. According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, it's believed that Kane and Toews have both asked for salaries of around $12 million per year. McKenzie notes that both players will likely end up with a lower salary than their initial ask, but could still see $10 million per year averages. Toews and Kane each have one year remaining on their contracts. They both signed identical five-year $31.5 million contracts prior to the 2010-11 season. McKenzie adds that many agents believe the salary cap could rise to as high as $75 million for the 2015-16 season and continue to rise in the seasons following. In that case, double-digit average salaries (in millions) could become the new standard for top players. In 76 games with the Blackhawks this season, Toews scored 28 goals and added 40 assists. He scored nine goals and 17 points in 19 playoff games. Kane scored 29 goals and added 40 assists in 69 games. He added eight goals and 20 points in 19 playoff games. Toews was drafted third overall in the 2006 Draft by the Blackhawks. Kane was drafted first overall in the 2007 Draft. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=455746 Discuss this insanity lol
Warhippy
Either Toews or Kane is leaving the team then. That or Sharp + is on the way out to keep them both. Either way, hey owners and players. Thanks yet again for the lockout. Things really changed didn't they....

PlayStation
I dont believe this report at all. Nobody in the right mind would ask for so. Plus they are playing for a stacked team aka Chicago who are easily one of the favourites to win it next year. Everything they've accomplished in Chicago, the same core has basically stayed in place (stars-wise) I just dont see either of them being that selfish. Realistically it'll be something like Getzlaf and Perry at 8.25 mill, even thats high.

TheRussianRocket.
Holy fuck. That is beyond stupid. Yea they're both 26 (which is scary as hell cause they have 6 more years of prime hockey & will get better), but still, $12 mill per? Are they retarded? No one else in the league would ever even think about passing 10 and here they are talking about 12...sure tells us where they're priorities are. Holy cow lol, $12 mill!?... Mike Vanderhoek
Its a starting point. Not what the players will get. I think Chicago will retain both but knowing the kind of dollars being desired could work in Chicagos favor if they wish to move either player. Would not be surprised to see Florida as a destination for one if Chicago cant retain.

When this happens, I wonder if other players start believing it is just greed. A very good remedy for having to blow up a team and start building a new one. Once again, it's proof positive an organization needs to develop its the system. At 12M/Year and an 82 game season, that is over $146,000.00 per game, a very, very nice pay day one could say! And the poverty line is about 7 - 8 times lower than what they may make in a single game. How many of us get paid that much for an hours work per day. Welcome to a hike in ticket prices due to nothing but simple greed. Us poor fans. Go figure..........

Heretic
So...will giving these guys more money guarantee another cup? Seriously, this has to stop. Pay for performance is the only way to go. Win the cup - you get a big bonus to get you to this '$12 million' - don't win? No problem, you still get $7 mil for playing a game.
TimberWolf
You can certainly make a case to prefer Toews on your team over Crosby. It at least deserves a better retort than emoticon spam.

People act like Toews single handedly won the 2 cups and 2 gold medals. He's been on a stacked team each time. Sure he is a great player, but Crosby >> Toews. Crosby is the best player in the world, he makes players around him WAY better. Toews has had a way stronger supporting cast than Crosby each time he has won a cup. ice orca
There is a pile of people who would take Toews over Crosby, and I bet if you polled every GM in the league it would be a 50-50 split
