McCann's game requires a bigger, leaner body.

Combination of speed, two-way ability and offensive skill.. his skill set reminds me of Pavelski.

Whether or not he becomes as talented is very uncertain at this point but I really do like what he attributes to this team.

With that said Utica is probably best for him. He needs a top 6 role and will only get a 4th line role with the Canucks. He also needs to get 10-15 pounds of solid muscle added. That won't happen in one off-season.

With the amount of centers we have we can afford to be patient and properly develop McCann.

never know, I think he will be a guy to watch in the battle for Sutter's right wing

Left wing.  He shoots left and has never played the wing before this season - doubtful they put him on his off-wing while learning a new position.

Off wing is less important than it is with D, where it's particularly suited to shooters as passes feed right into their wheelhouse for one timers. Playmakers would want to be on their strong side typically to make passes easier. That's why you may see a D who typically plays only strong side to swap on the PP, to set up the shot. McCann is definitely a shooter and likely gravitated to the right side of the ice when looking for seams for shots anyway.

That's more a generalization than any firm observation though, so who knows.

good job explaining.  from personal preference, I choose to play on the left side on offense and the right side if I'm playing back.  but playing right wing (my strong side) is perfectly fine too.  like you said, I like the left side because one timers are a lot more comfortable on the off wing.

I played both sides on forward and defence, but preferred left wing and right defence (right hand shot). I was hardly a specialist though (not because I was great at both, but rather a bit mediocre at both) so you'll mainly see those types of choices for wingers whose skill set leans more to one or the other. For players who have a bit of both it's not as big a deal generally for which side they're on.

Look at Burrows for example, he's a left hand shot and played left wing all throughout his early career when he was used in a checking role. He wasn't getting prime offensive minutes so it didn't matter as much if he was a sniper or playmaker. Then he got put with the Sedins on his off wing and fit just fine since he has a better shot than skill at playmaking and it allowed him more opportunity with the one timer.

It's not a hard and fast rule (Bossy and Gartner were both RW/RHS) and perhaps something that has developed more in the past couple decades, but it does allow for a more suitable set up.

Said he'll stay in Vancouver all summer to train.  Good, he'll prove everyone wrong again and make the 'vey-less' lineup and hopefully get some of those coddled minutes Vey got and excel.

Seems to be the usual story -- somebody floats it out there, media picks it up, then the impressionable ones on CDC grab and run with it, then Botch sees it here and fabricates a narrative around it to make it sound legitimate, and it takes off with a life of its own until people start believing it either wringing their hands or making up trade proposals.

Only way I could see us moving him is if we draft Mathews. Even then I think management would prefer to keep him and possibly switch him to LW (centre fill in for injuries etc).

I was going to say if we can get Mathews then he becomes a little expendable... I was thinking something like McCann+our 3/4 rd pick for Drouin....just an idea

edit. or trading him for a D prospect would make sense as well

Watch Drouin vs Detroit.   He is twice the player McCann is.  He is quick and shifty, he's not big but he is evasive and he has been playing with an edge lately.

But McCann, two-way meat and potatoes, right?

I would love to package McCann to Tampa for Drouin, like you said I saw him lag night. They kid is an unreal talent.

We could afford to take that Carle contract, something like....

McCann, Sbisa, CBJ conditional 2nd.

For

Drouin, Carle

However my belief again is that if we can get demko signed, then management will have him as the first line centre in Utica to help with demkos transition as well as get McCann playing in all situations.

  • 3 weeks later...

Does McCann make the team next year?  It would be nice if he did.  With Sedin on 1st, Sutter on 2nd, does that slot Horvat down to 3rd, can McCann come in and take that 4th spot?  The addition of Granlund changes things a bit.  Maybe McCann moves down to the AHL for seasoning.  Granlund signed for what 2 years, with the injury bug, McCann could be called up.  I am just wondering where he fits long run, 2nd line C, 1st line C?  He has such a sick wrist shot.
