Does McCann make the team next year?  It would be nice if he did.  With Sedin on 1st, Sutter on 2nd, does that slot Horvat down to 3rd, can McCann come in and take that 4th spot?  The addition of Granlund changes things a bit.  Maybe McCann moves down to the AHL for seasoning.  Granlund signed for what 2 years, with the injury bug, McCann could be called up.  I am just wondering where he fits long run, 2nd line C, 1st line C?  He has such a sick wrist shot.

Utica IMO. Kid is gonna be great but he needs time.

Granlund, IMO was very much the 'Sutter' to McCann's 'Horvat'.

If anything on the wing - WD spoke several times of how it's not unusual to have young Cs start at wing - he gave the example of Larkin.  The 4Cs seem also set: Henrik, Sutter, Horvat, Granlund.

All year WD and Henrik have spoken of how much they miss Sutter at C.  WillieD sees Horvat as a defensive C who works off transition with defensive wingers (he even said that Baertschi is not the ideal fit with him because he takes Horvat away from his game) - sounds like C3 for Horvat.

Benning was quoted after Granlund's extension saying that the 4th line will be used to develop players and not as a grinding line - he thinks it's the new trend and Granlund is pencilled in as C4.  Likely with Virtanen with how WD kept on saying he wanted to get a look of the two together.

WillieD speaks of McCann as an offensive player (unlike Horvat whom he says the strength of his game is defence) so top-6 for sure but he'll likely need some time in Utica.  All these trade McCann proposals are a bit surprising given that there really isn't a more offensive C in the system.

I'm hoping Jared makes the team out of camp, for me it all depends on off season ufa signings. If we sign a wing he is in Utica as first call up.

My main concern with Jared is how he fits into benning's future plans, I can see Jim seeing him as expendable, much like Hunter, even though I have him penciled in as top 6 for his entire career.

Jared McCann is a persistent kid who doesn't easily take no for an answer. I think he has a terrific summer of training and comes to camp a bit bigger and stronger. He's competitive as hell, so I wouldn't be so quick to assume he's headed to Utica. Let's see how he shows in camp before burying him in the minors.

I agree, he'll prove everyone and their moms wrong about starting the season in Utica.  Now that we aren't getting Matthews, I'd like to see Sutter with the twins or McCann at RW.  IMO He is the prospect with the highest ceiling and it would be foolish to trade him.  I still believe he'll be our number center 5 years from now.

McCann is a stud and I hope Benning does not trade him, if he does, we will be burned in the long run!!  Not sure where he fits next year though, with 4C signed, injury call-up maybe.

I agree.  Love McCann's skills combined with his bite.  He's a boy with a chip on his shoulder too.  The kid is the next Doug Gilmore.

I hope Green stays with Utica this next year and we send McCann down to get time with him. Love McCann's game and grit but he needs to get tougher and seasoned. Meanwhile, we aquire a top 10 pick again

I likely agree with the first two sentences.  Disagree with the last.

We would have been really close to making the playoffs if it wasn't for injuries.  We're going to have more talent, year-older young players and a healthy lineup.  I expect us to make the playoffs next season, negating a tank and high pick.

And I'm fine with McCann being in the lineup this coming season, but he has to prove that he worked his butt off in the offseason and gained the strength required to play at the highest level.  He was *almost* ready last season, so there is no reason to believe he wouldn't be in an even better position this coming season.  But, if he isn't impressive, the logical choice is that he goes back to Utica for the year.   Same for Virtanen - though Virtanen at least plays the type of game that can be well utilized on a bottom line role - he just needs to find consistency and learn the game a bit better.

I think he has the talent and the skill to be a first line winger. I think he and Boeser will find some chemistry and turn into a great duo moving forward. McCann has the IQ and the playmaking ability to find Boeser that exact moment he frees himself up. He can also make room for himself because he has such an insane shot himself.

We kept him in the NHL this year because we could. That pre-season production was enticing. And then everyone else got going, so he looked like a 19 year old in a man's league. His will and determination made him compete to a level above his junior body and I think that his development should continue in the AHL.

He's besties with Demko from development camp and I think that Utica can finally become the springboard for our prospects, from draft to the NHL.

A large part of keeping him was the idea that he'd not benefit much from playing in a league of 18 year olds but could as a Canuck.

This is my view of McCann's situation: he showed promise and solid class in certain areas but in certain aspect, he got 'smoked' senseless. He needs to make drastic improvement in the face-off circle his priority #1. Needs to get stronger and can't just peel away from every body contact that he isn't throwing.

These, now he will acquire more in the AHL- atleast for the first half of the season. He needs to not lose his confidence and play 'long term catchup' at the NHL in those important aspects. He needs to grow into his body a bit more & improve against lesser players but still a league that is much, much closer to the NHL in 'strength' component than anything else. Playing an anchoring centerman and arguably 1C at the AHL against weaker face-off specialists than the NHL will allow him to settle into his 'face-off groove' rather than being 'clueless & trying too many things at puck drop'.

His ideal trajectory is camp> pre-season> 2-3 NHL games> AHL(stay there for atleast half a season before callus, barring injury duty of course)>NHL near TDL./2nd half/next year.

I could see it, sure.  But you're assuming a lot of things:
McCann gains the strength required to be effective.

Boeser translates his game to the NHL.

Horvat (who IS a boss) ends up with a higher ceiling than I think he truly has, OR we get a star center for the 1st line by other means.  And no, McCann isn't likely to ever be successful in the center position unless he extensively works on his faceoffs.

Boeser can take faceoffs for McCann too lol

McCann will be good at face-offs in time.  He needs to physically get stronger for a lot of reasons, of which face-offs is one.  He's super smart, super competitive, and has super quick hands.  His face-offs will be super (in time) too.

Or we trade him.

I'm just assuming the best case scenario. I think his faceoffs will get better as he has a good stick and just needs to work on pure strength, but long term I see him as a winger. He is already somewhat effective because of his shot, speed and playmaking ability. If he spends 3 years focusing on strength, he should be fine.
