[Rumor] Canucks will make a serious attempt at Iginla

Recommended Posts

Depends what management would say/do; If they use the cap space and sign a bunch of the older 'cup seekers' to that one-year deal for 'a bit more than average' money with the promise to trade them to a contender at the deadline *IF* we aren't in serious contention, that might be enough. Mix of youth and energy with the experience and desperation of "not many chances left".

Mats Sundin helped this team by being on it for 3 months. Imagine the help of two or three of that kind of mentorship for the younger guys?

Trade Hansen + Burrows + Corrado for Myers, 2015 3rd

Iginla - 2 years, 14 million

Hiller - 2 years, 10 million

dispite some obvious question marks, this is a team I could see being quite competitive...

sedin sedin iggy

jensen bonino vey

Higgins horvat kassian

Matthias Richardson dorsett

hamhuis myers

edler tanev

sbisa bieksa

stanton

hiller

lack

but I cant see Iggy coming to Van. :(

Not much wrong you can do in signing him to a 1-2 year deal.

I'm not sure what we are planning for the 2nd line centre. Not sure if Bonino is ready for a full-time 2nd line centre, and don't think Horvat is ready for that role either, so my guess is that management believes that Bonino is capable of 2nd line minutes and his ability to put up points. I do like his playmaking ability of which exceeds Kesler's which may mean that the line may be able to work as a cohesive unit rather and may be able to put up better points.

I believe that if we sign Iginla (top 6), we are likely signing a UFA goalie like Miller or Hiller (#1 goalie) and we may end up trying to trade for a right-handed playmaking style defensemen maybe Myers if there is actual meat to the rumours of GMJB targeting him.

I like our overall look and mix of young players and veterans in this case.

Yet who knows what Benning is planning but I'm sure him and Linden has an idea of what they want this team to look like for next season.

As a side note, even if Iginla does sign with us and we end up missing the playoffs we can end up trading him at the deadline to a contender.

NTC stops Hansen and Burrows, and i think at this point Buff prob wants young players rather than vets.

Tanev + Prospect (Markstrom ?) + 2015 1rst probably

But yeah I agree Myers + Iggy + (M or H)iller and we are likely competitive enough to make the playoffs.

From the looks of things, Bieksa and the Sedins are so far the only players we have who've expressed the desire to stay in Van regardless of our status as contenders... maybe Burrows. Wouldn't be surprised if Hansen waives to go to a contending team if any go after him.

Gotta say no to Iggy though, he's not what we're looking for.

I think Burrows is staying and just stating that Hansen isn't going to buffalo in a trade.

Iginla I think would be a great fit, be a great mentor for Kassian and Jensen, he's a good finisher and he seems to fit the Sedins cycle play.

The only thing that gives me hope is Benning's relationship with Iginla and Boston's inability to sign him. Benning would need to convince him that we're a contender, and Iginla puts us one step closer.

I'm probably crazy, but I could imagine us being really good next season if Benning can sign the right guys to the right contracts. We have almost $18 million in cap space, around $6 million will probably go to resigning RFAs. That leaves us enough space to sign a couple of good free agents. If we could sign Iginla and another difference-maker, and have some of the young guys step up and the Sedins return to point-per-game form, we could be pretty good. Probably not Stanley Cup good, but competitive.
