Sign UFA Dustin Penner to aid Bonino

Recommended Posts

The Washington Capitals has marked LW Dustin Penner's situation as "unlikely to be back". It would be great for us to sign a guy like Penner who has a big and physical upside to his game as well as a good scoring touch with his former teammate and line mate centre Nick Bonino. Dustin Penner played great in Anaheim and really enjoyed his time in Anaheim as he said that it was sad leaving there. Penner also arguably played his best hockey this year when he was playing beside Bonino. As for the Canucks who is currently missing a solid second line left winger as Higgins is streaky and Burrows's situation is still unknown, Penner would be a great pick up as he won't be as competitive on the market as some other wingers on the market, like Cammeleri and Jussi Jokinen, who are also great considerations. However, what makes Dustin Penner a better fit for the canucks is his rugged playing style as well as his proven chemistry with former teammate Nick Bonino. As we all know in sports, chemistry isn't something that we can often develop, so it would be a safe move for the canucks to get a guy like Dustin Penner to play along side our newly acquired second line Centre, Nick Bonino. This way, we can get started on scoring right off the bat next year. Oh and did I mention, he's won't be as competitive on the market and his salary is $2 Million as of now? This sounds prettttty sweeeeettttt. Spread the word!!!! Cheers!!!

Dustin Penner has had a very spotty record since 2010,... altho' his brief stint with the Ducks seemed semi-successful. Yet, they stll moved him on to WASH. I think the knock on him is that he disappears for stretches. ..& doesn't always play as big on the ice ...as he is...or as people think he could...seems to carry a lot of excess weight around on his listed 6' 4" frame too. Is fitness an issue.., or is this more a result of not being played for many minutes. The onus would then be on him to prepare himself for game fitness,.. in other ways,...does he not do this?

As good as this might sound, I think I'm going to pass on this one. Maybe because Penner isn't that same guy anymore. He used to be that 40-60 point player and now he's gotten off his tracks.

That being said I short term deal would be fine. But if we don't sign him, then I wouldn't be too sad.

Burrows or Higgins could play LW on a line with Bonino & Kassian.

Or Benning could go out and target a Moulson/Raymond/Pouliot type player.

Many more options to explore before Penner IMO.

I'm hell bent on seeing Matthias Bonino kassian.. We have an abundance of centers someone will need to play wing and Matthias has a lot of skill to go with his size and he is fast .I say try it. But I am not the coach.
