Langdon Algur
Reading all the draft talk on here it seems lots of people had pretty strong ideas on who they would have liked the Canucks to draft. Just for fun I thought I would create a post to allow people to go on here and tell us who they would have picked from who was available at the Canucks first and second round draft positions. I then include a link to this thread in my signature so years from now we can bump and see whose drafting was better than the Canucks scouting staff and whose was worse. So here it goesCanucks at 6th overall: Jake VirtanenMe: happy with the Virtanen, but would have likely gone with Nylander (taken by TOR at 8th)Canucks at 24th overall: Jared McCannMe: Ivan Barbashev (taken by STL at 33rd)Canucks at 36th overall: Thatcher DemkoMe: Brayden Point (taken in 3rd round at 79th overall by TBL)Canucks at 50th overall: traded pick for Linden Vey from the KingsMe: would have kept the picked and drafted Roland McKeown (taken by LA with the traded 50th pick)What would you have done? Makaramel MacKhiato
I'm glad we got Virtanen, it's like getting a guy that'll play his entire career in Vancouver. Don't know why people are so upset. Other ones are good. 50th overall I would've kept for McKeown as well, but who knows why the guy dropped, maybe had some attitude problems, I'll trust management on this one. This is just for fun.
TimberWolf
The picks were safe ones so I have no problem with that. Though it was the worst year for us to suck bad enough to draft that high. I am more concerned with the trades. I would have prefered to at least come away with the 10th pick in the kesler leaving no room for error in drafting. Even if that meant leaving the Ducks one of the roster players.
dbark95
As soon as you alter one prior pick all the other picks arent necessarily available. Like bending a blade of grass when you go back in time
kloubek
I am generally happy with his picks. I'm a little unsure about Vey, only because I'm unsure where he would fit on this team. He can play both wing and centre - which is good, but he isn't skilled enough right now for a top two-line role, yet isn't big and physical for a bottom role either. I suppose he'd end up a 3rd line player - yet we don't need another 3rd line player if we retain the current roster. And even if we did find a spot for him to play, I'd hate to know we might have given up a 2nd round pick for another Raymond. (Not necessarily speed-wise, but I mean another player who doesn't fit into our system). So, with all that said, I would have kept the pick and got McKeown too. He was projected by some to be a far higher draft than 50th.
Goal:thecup
6th: wanted Ritchie; second choice was Virtanen - very happy and vindicated vs those that wanted to draft wisps.24th: at first, months ago, I wondered if McCann was good enough to pick with 6th, so I was completely elated to get him with 24th.Demko: did not see that coming; goalies are such a long-term investment that they have to be very good to "waste" a first or second pick on; happy that JB decided this guy was good enough.Vey will be very good; we did not even have this pick until just before the draft and I did not have anything under consideration so just happy we got it and used it in an interesting way.I think Benning treated us to the best "trade and draft" day that I have ever followed; I am just stoked at all the new talent and do not miss the assets we gave up.Edit: Spelling
DeltaSwede
I think the last three players selected in the draft have very limited ceilings. I don't think any of the players will wear a Canuck jersey regularly. Tryamkin is massive but Jack Glover who was still on the board is a better defensemen now and will be in the future. Pettit was a 4th line center for Erie, the guy scored like 3 goals. Players like that are everywhere to be found, wouldn't be surprised if he went undrafted if the Canucks didn't pick him. Not to mention that there is an abundance of defensive minded centers in the system already. Would have liked Adam Ollas Mattson to be selected, a similar player to Cederholm with similar upside. Mackenze Stewart, a longshot to make the AHL. The guy is a 6'5 defensemen and that is literally all he has got going for him. He fights and does okay against smaller guys, loses most of his fights. Again players like this can be signed every summer. Would have wanted the Canucks to take a flyer on a guy that could become something (Spencer Watson or Tkachev). Bennings Sawyer Hannay pick. Saying that, I hope I am completely wrong and Benning made the right picks.

Gaudette Celly
Saying that, I hope I am completely wrong and Benning made the right picks. Not to mention the rest of the scouting staff, I'll put Benning up against anyone here... in fact, everyone combined.

ftmN
The only thing I would've done differently would've been not given up the 3rd rounder 2015, I'd be very happy if it wasn't for that.

newgm
I like the Virtanen pick, also if we'd received Anaheim's 10th instead of the 24th, we probably don't pick McCann which might prove to be a fortunate stroke of good luck if the kid turns out to be a great player. Trying this again. V.1 disappea.... 1.) I like this pick. I might have gone with Ritchie, just because he's that much bigger and knows how to use his size to great effect (not to say that Virtanen doesn't throw his weight around). 2.) McCann is also a good pick. Lemieux is also someone to whom I would have given a lot of thought towards drafting at 24th. Maybe Barbashev. I might have tried to trade up with this pick (beyond any attempts which the team may have made) in hopes of getting Ritchie, Perlini or even Kapenen (depending on which team I could close a deal). 3.) Demko looks like he can become a good NHL goalie. Can he become Schneider 2.0? Maybe. 4.) I like the trade for Vey. He looks like a promising 2nd/3rd liner. If I didn't trade for Vey, the McKeown is possibly who I would have drafted. If not him, then maybe MacLeod. regards, G.
Herberts Vasiljevs
I am very very pleased with the Vey move. He's a beauty. Once training camp starts, I believe a lot more people will start to become a big fan of the move (even if it costed us one of McKeown, Mayo, Kirkland, Martin, Lammikko, etc). Very underrated move by Benning in my opinion!
2SKATES1STICK
Vey is more like a playmaking Higgins than a Raymond. he's got good foot speed, but more importantly he knows how to be harder on the puck(like Higgins) and has a good release. MOST IMPORTANTLY he's got better vision and hand eye than both, and has an ability to make plays in high pressure situations confidently and tape to tape. Quite frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see him out play Mattias, and fit in comfortably with Bonino and Kassian. In fact, because of his playmaking abilities, he would make that line better, whereas Higgins is more of a complimentary player. I am generally happy with his picks. I'm a little unsure about Vey, only because I'm unsure where he would fit on this team. He can play both wing and centre - which is good, but he isn't skilled enough right now for a top two-line role, yet isn't big and physical for a bottom role either.
