Why Does Det Have Such A Tough Time Attracting UFAs?

Recommended Posts

It seems like every year they miss out on the top UFAs, this was not the case in the past. Their the best run organization in hockey, yet the best they have been able to do the last few years is a very old Alfredsson and Wiese. Doesn't make sense. I thought Suter was a perfect fit after Lidstrom left, Ehrhoff chose Pit, Parise said no thanks. Legwand was lost for nothing, that might have been Det's idea. I don't get it, they do everything first class, they have great up and coming prospects, they play an exciting style, Babcock is a well respected coach.

You know, it's not always about hockey. The players have things they have to think about when committing their time and effort to a city. Unfortunately for the Red Wings they're based in Detroit, pretty grim area to carry out your life outside the rink

Less about attracting them more about Holland being smart enough to not get into bidding wars over overpriced players who's contracts are usually regretted in the long run.

That and a little of the fact that the Motor City is on the level of a 3rd world country.

@ BurgerKing...do you need to ask? Two words: term and money (I guess that's technically three words).

And as we saw, when all things are equal on the T&M, player will choose team that gives them a better chance at winning the cup or a better lifestyle for their families (except I'm starting to think that a lot of players live away from their families during the hockey season if they are firmly established in any given community...e.g., Lu when he played here had his family in South FLA...Pronger's family has always stayed in STL...Miller whose wife is at their home in LA...etc.).

When you draft and develop players like Detroit, you don't need high profile UFA's.

They aren't willing to overpay, among other things.

And like others have mentioned, Detroit is a broken city. Either way, they don't need them and get it done like they always do.

Are there no rich and safe areas of Detroit? In the suburbs perhaps? The area around the Staples Center in LA isn't the nicest, but players definitely don't live there. Heck, the area around Rogers Arena (to the east) isn't the greatest!

Are you kidding me? Have you ever been in and around The Staples Center? LA Live District is filled with entertainment venues, including restaurants and other amenities that is geared towards attracting young urbanites.

Detroit made a name for it's self as Hockey City back when there was no salary Cap, a couple of late round picks shocked every one and blossomed, General Motors was running three shifts a day. Since then their drafting has been average, there's now a Salary Cap means they can'r buy themselves out of trouble and the old guard has now passed through...as for GM they're half the company they once were...the city is in bankruptcy....the inner city is a ghetto, Babcock leaves for Pitts next summer...just to mention a few things. Apart from that it seems to be going well :picard:

After the auto industry collapsed and that city just hasn't been the same. The white guys who had the majority of those blue collar, high paying auto jobs started going broke and disappearing. Detroit is a shadow of its former self.

I was there once...there's nothing good there except in the financial district. The suburbs are bad too.
