The Vancouver Canucks named John Weisbrod vice president of player personnel, the team announced Monday.

Weisbrod joins the Canucks after serving three years as assistant general manager of player personnel for the Calgary Flames. He was director of professional and collegiate scouting for the Boston Bruins from 2006-2011 and served as a pro scout for the Dallas Stars during the 2005-06 season.

Weisbrod played for Harvard from 1987-1991 and won a NCAA championship in 1989. He was selected in the fourth round (No. 73) of the 1987 NHL Draft by the Minnesota North Stars.

Bennings buddy from the Bruins

Hmmm, I remember people here were worried about him coming over because of the, in their minds, 'taint of the Feaster run Flames organization'... However he spent some time with Benning in Boston scouting the college side... anybody have a list of college players taken by Weisbrod? Could be enlightening.

Oddly, if he is here as a Benning croney (or whatnot), why is he 'assistant VP' and not 'assistant GM'? Wouldn't that put him under Linden, yet over Benning?

So we have two VP of player personnel now? Wasn't that part of Henning's title.

Yeah, that was his main title pretty much. I suppose he was officially VP Player Personnel and AGM: http://canucks.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40185

Back when the initial Weisbrod rumours were happening, I figured it meant Henning would be the odd man out.

But Linden seems to have committed to retaining Henning, so I suppose they'll just shuffle things around somehow.

Drafted Dwight Howard (off the board at the time), has had success in Boston, and found Gaudreau for Calgary.

I like it!

"Off the board" is not really accurate. The choice was basically between Howard, who was coming out of high school raw, but had basically unlimited athletic potential, and Emeka Okafor, who was a polished, accomplished college player, with less upside. Weisbrod definitely made the right choice, but it wasn't an "off the board" selection.

What I mean is that he went with less accomplished player. A lot of Magic fans did NOT like that.

Well the Canucks are in the market for a future #1 centre!

I see Howard more as a Chara-esque defensive force. I think someone like Russell Westrbook would be an awesome two-way centre though. And if Lebron had been born in Medicine Hat he would obviously be the greatest power forward in NHL history.

as for guys that he would have been Instrumental in getting from college from 2008-2011 Joe Colburne (1st rounder) and Torie Krug (FA signing) come to mind.

I believe that Florek and Trotman were also Weisbrod picks and both look to be solid choices (especially for the later rounds).

EDIT: For a 5th and 7th rounder, respectively, the fact that they've already played a handful of NHL games and will likely yield a decent number of career NHL games played is considered a win at the drafting table (even if they only pan out as depth players).
