(proposal) (VAN-WPG) Winnipeg option two: Andrew Ladd

Recommended Posts

Earlier, I posted a thread on what I would give up for Evander Kane. I suggested Jensen, Hansen, and Markstrom; however, it seems like Benning may want to go a different route and try and pry Andrew Ladd out of WPG. Another local guy, he could very well sign an extension in two years if everything goes well. He would also be a great mentor for Kassian on how to be an effective powerforward. Also, a line of Ladd-_____-Kassian would be a tough line to play against. Exactly the kind of line we need in the pacific devision. We saw what Booth-Richardson-Kassian could do, so maybe Ladd-Bonino-Kassian, would be dynamite.

To VAN: Andrew Ladd

To WPG: Jacob Markstrom, Jannik Hansen, and Shawn Mattias.

Why WPG does this:

  • Shawn Mattias replaces Ladd, and is a few years younger. I really don't see Mattias sticking around after this year considering, as it looks right now, he is going to be on the fourth line. Over in WPG, they can use him as a left winger or a center at least in their top 9. Mattias to them would be what Bonino was for us in regards to the Kesler trade. A younger version to replace what was lost. Big man, for big man.
  • Jannik Hansen, as I stated in my Evander Kane thread, would be a great speedy mentor for Nik ehlers. Plus on a 2.5 million cap hit for 4 years, he could really help out WPG.
  • Jacob Markstrom. This one is easy. They need a young goalie who can minimum play backup, but could potentially be a starter. We happen to have one who fits the role perfectly wanting out. Markstrom would turn into their form of Eddie Lack, a young goalie with starting potential in the lineup.

Why VAN does this:

  • We add a local guy, who replaces the leadership lost from Kesler.
  • Top 6 power forward for 2 years
  • Mentor for Kassian
  • Could possibly stay long term if we want due to the hometown connection.

Signings.

  • Linden Vey for no more than 1 million
  • Darren Archibald for 850k, to play 4th line left wing. I don't know why, but I'm a huge believer in Darren Archibald. I think if we give him a chance, he could be a really solid 4th liner.

Lineup

Sedin---Sedin---Vrbata

Ladd---Bonino---Kassian

Higgins---Horvat---Burrows

Archibald---Richardson---Vey

(Sestito---Dorsett)

Hamhuis---Tanev

Edler---Corrado

Sbisa---Bieksa

(Stanton)

Miller

Lack

That seems like a really solid lineup to me. One that can play in our division and still make playoffs. Some people may consider it an underpayment but lets hear some opinions.

Can't we target Wheeler instead?

Wheeeler is a beauty. Big guy hits hard plays hard. I bet they would want more for wheeler though wouldn't they?

Honestly I think that trade is fair. Doesn't Hansen have a NTC limited? He just had a baby last year don't c why he would want to leave.

Hansen's wife is from Winnipeg and that's where his family spends the off-season. He would waive to go there.

I do agree with OP insofar as Winnipeg seems to be a natural spot for Markstrom. Packaging Hanson also works and lowers the cap hit as we have more than enough third/fourth line players. What we need is a 2nd line winger. Kane, Ladd or Wheeler would do the trick. Of the three, I would prefer Kane---high risk but unquestionably high reward if it works out.

benning said he is finished until after the start of season....enjoy your summer

oh yeah I heard about that. I don't think he said he was done for sure though. I mean, you wouldn't be doing your job right if you didn't at least consider ways to make the team better

There is only one reason to trade Ladd, to rebuild. A number of teams can offer significantly better packages than the ones made here. Packaging a bunch of easily replaceable pieces isn't getting you a player like Ladd's caliber. To get a player like Ladd you are going to have to offer something that you really value highly. At the very least you have to at least start with a 1st round pick.
