Tanking is a funny word! (Long Read)

I have been reading the "What Doug Wilson said" thread, and pretty much had enough of the petty squabbling going on there, insults, he said she said BS.....

To me both side have some validity to them, and a little respect and understanding could go a long way here.

I would like to present to you what both sides, made me believe from your arguements, it goes like this!

(Wish I could put music to this! LOL).....I think it would be ....."Don't worry! Be Happy!" ....LOL

Anyway..here it goes........If I was GM a narrative

First off......I work for the owner to make money in most cases, getting to the playoffs, makes my owner rich, therefore, that makes him happy!

To do so, I must ice the best team I can possibly ice, even then it may not be good enough

I must balance my budget, so that I can afford my players today, and in the future, to the best of my ability. Even then, the league may change rules, that change the way I do buisness, therefore causing me to change my direction. This can have an adverse result in my competiveness, as I may have to change some of my personel to fit under the new league rules. Cap issues are on going with it reaching into every facet of my management.

Now like I said earlier, my goal is to reach the playoffs and make money for my boss, to do so, I must be constantly reassessing our position within the standings, so that I have a better understanding of our competitors and thier ability to take away our goal of making the playoffs.

There are a few realites in our league that I must understand, one's which helps me and others in our position and one's that alters my ability to ice the best product.

My owner is rich and allows me to spend to the cap, giving me some advantage to our poorer, less fortunate teams. This is good in the sense that we are almost always competitive to a degree, but hinders us in other ways, such as aquiring young top end talent. Which ultimately allows us to climb higher or fall lower on the competitiveness chart.

Another realism, I face is the fact that not all cities are equal in drawing UFA's and College kids, some of the reasons for this are economical, others are more geographical (Note* Not everybody likes to freeze all winter in desolate cities)( Families of our players mention this fact from time to time, and it costs some teams more to draw those players in.)

Refocus!

There is however a time where I must make a quiet determination of reality, and that is where late in the season, our team has no or almost chance of making the playoffs. This is a lonely time for GM's and it coincides with a very lonely walk to my presidents office and then together to our owners office to discuss and state the obvious.

We have no chance of making the playoffs! These are words that I do not like to utter! Especially to the prez and owner. I will explain that we are 10 points out of the last playoff position, and there are 3 teams in better position then us to make it. And that our chances are slim.

I will then say, maybe it is time to call up some of our younger players, give them some experience, and ready them for next year, all along not uttering the words "Pack it in" (Tank, for those that are not savy to the expression).

They will say, "not yet", there is still a chance, but as soon as there is no way to get in, start bringing them up. "But don't make it to obvious, we still have to fill the seats"!

I will then start bringing up my younger players, and giving more ice time to our younger regulars, and readying them for next year.

Secretly, this has been done for decades, and is a way of readying our young and getting ourselves a better drafting position in the upcoming draft. Maybe we will move up 1 or 2 places, 3 if we are lucky, and we will pick another player or 2, to enhance our fans dreams.

We will do all this, walking a tight rope, and never! Never, declare we are tanking for picks, because no one likes quiters! They don't sell tickets, and that will not make our owner happy!

And that is about the size of it! And that is why you don't hear NHL GM's use that 4 letter word!

The End!

PS.... that's my take on this....lol.,,,,flame on!

It'd be great to get a shiny new prospect who has elite talent. Every team wants that. But how has that worked out for Edmonton?

To build a winning culture you have to try your best to win every game. You have to show the young ones that they have to try hard every single game and throw their all into the game. If we start telling the young players that "it's okay to lose" then they'll begin to get lazy and the Canucks will be caught in a vicious circle of losing.

And how will we convince the players on the team now to tank? What are we gonna say to them? "Hey Henrik, um we kinda want to draft a top young centre who is going to take your job so do you mind losing every game so we can get him? Kthxbai." :sadno:

exactly how long do you think Hall Eberle Nugent Hopkins and Yakupov will stick to losing til they say screw this we want to be traded or they sign elsewhere

it's a toxic environment and the water bottle incident i think was the boiling point it's only a matter of time if they keep missing the playoffs that these lose these shiny prospects

How has it worked out for Chicago? Or LA? Or Pittsburgh? Tanking or just plain sucking, its the same result with a different method.

If tanking ever happened, the players don't need to be told. Its as easy as the coach playing the players to their weaknesses, or using gameplays that won't work. Tell Ovechkin to play as a defensive forward. Tell the Sedins to play physical. Easy to ruin a team without the players being told to tank.

Honestly, 'hows that wurkin for Edmonton?' has come up more often than somebody suggesting throwing games on purpose.

But then watch us perform worse than Edmonton this season...

And when we rebound faster than Edmonton into legit contender status, i'd say mission freakin' accomplished. Wouldn't you say?

Or, nah... Let's continue floundering for a decade like, um, Calgary.

How's dat wurkin' for Calgary?

How about my Dad and his golfing partners nicknames.

Sandbaggers. They were called that because in the tournaments they played golf in on Vancouver Island. They were so good, they didn't want to hurt peoples feelings. So they deliberately missed shots. And screwed up their scores so that they would still compete and not frustrate the other golfers.
