[Signing] ROR re-signs with the Avalanche, Avoids Arbitration

Recommended Posts

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but imo this kid is overrated. Not saying he's terrible, but for the reported money he's signed for, he should be a borderline point per game guaranteed player. If 6.2 is correct, that's more than Matt Duchene, and he definitely doesnt bring more to the table than him imo.

Well, you do have a very narrow concept of player value though - reducing the criteria to being a 'borderline ppg player' doesn't really say that much.

O'Reilly scored 2.42 pp60, which tied him for 69th in the NHL - in other words top-line NHL production.

He lead the NHL last year with 83 takeaways and was 2nd in the NHL with a turnover plus minus of +50 (Schwartz +51). He is already +228 for his career.

51.7% in the faceoff circle and 51.3% lifetime - at only 23 years of age.

Faced the second strongest quality of competition among AVs forwards and had some of the better underlying numbers on the team.

He drew one minor penalty last year and is one of the AVs better penalty killers.

If being a 28 goal/ 64 point scorer isn't worth that cap hit in your mind, the complete player should be, because there is clearly more to the game than point totals.

What doesn't make a great deal of sense to me is the AVs hard line with their outstanding young two way centers - they balked at 4 years at 7 million for Stastny and lost him for nothing, they've just short termed O'Reilly and risk the same, but were willing to give Iginla a 35+ contract at 3 years and 5.3 million.

I personally would have given Stastny those terms, and O'Reilly a couple more years, and perhaps a bit higher cap hit given the reality that the cap is rising.

You weren't following the dialog, I clearly stated offensive stats aren't the whole picture, but N7 was trying to argue, to my understanding, that ROR offensive stats warranted salary equal to or better than Duchene, which is false imo. If you want to justify his contract based on other qualities then fine, but clarify that and dont try to say his scoring is equal to Duchene which is what N7 was trying to pass off

Actually, I responded to your first post - which quoted no one and had nothing to do with your subsequent debate with N7.

Fair enough. I stand by my post. ROR is overrated imo, if the said contract details are true I think it's overpriced by about 20% or so, which is significant in the cap era.
