(Discussion) Defensemen Id like to see

Recommended Posts

Im making this discussion to talk about defenseman Id like to see in Calgary, but please discuss what you think of the same mentioned guys in Vancouver. Of course not all of them will come but any 1 of them would be a beautiful fit on any team.

Brent Seabrook

2 Seasons left on conctract at a 5.8 Caphit. Limited NTC. With the big Kane and Toews contracts the Hawks will need to clear up cap, and likely lose one of their core members. Out of Kane Toews Sharp Hossa Kieth and Seabrook, I think Seabrook would obviously be the one to go. I would love to see the Flames package something up for Seabrook. Solid shut down guy and can put up big points too. I personally actually think he's a better overall defenseman then Keith.

Mike Green

Green is coming into his last season of his contract with the Caps, and its been rumoured he wants a trade. Although hes not the 80 point guy he was a few seasons ago, he has the capacity, when healthy to be a great power play QB, kinda large cap hit of 6 mil, but, being his contract year, he very likely might put up big numbers again. I can see Calgary (or any team for that matter) not having to give up to much for him either. I think the Caps management wouldnt mind seeing him traded. Maybe a prospect and a 2nd pick and a bottom pairing D man?

Kris Letang

We all have heard the rumours of Letang being asked to give a list of teams he would accept trades too. He's another gamble, even before his stroke he has often been plagued with injury. But when healthy I personally think hes the best offensive D man in the league. And his numbers arent just padded from Crosby and Malkin, if you look a few seasons ago when the Pens played a large portion of the season with BOTH Crosby and Malkin injured Letang still put up his usual numbers. Big cap hit of 7.2, but if your a young team like Calgary you can defanetly afford to slot him in

What do you guys think, would you make any moves for any of the above Dman in Vancouver, should the availability be there?

Much easier said than done. It's being quite a while since Van has drafted a boni-fide number 2, and except for Jovo-Cop an even longer time for a bona-fide #1. It simply isn't that easy to do.

I would take Seabrook and trade good talent for him in a heart beat - and there is a very good chance CHI will be trading him before the end of the year and before the full cap hit from singing Toews and Kane hits them (which it doesn't till next year). The most recent Hockey News had a cartoon of the CHI bench - on it were Kane and Toews - three maniquins and Stan Makita dressed to play and hunched over - the caption was showing what signing these players to such high contracts is going to do to their team soon. Just ask Pittsburgh what happens when you have 4 players eating up half your roster money.....

Seabrook and Sharp are going to be moved this year or next.

Very wrong. The chances of him being moved are 21million of cap space gone with Kane and Toews (not to mention Keith, Seabrook, Hossa, Sharp, Crawford and co's salaries). Seabrook might stay but the talk around the league is that two of the CHI stars will have to be moved before next year to make room for players in their system moving up to become cheaper versions of the proven assets they have. The wonders of the cap era and parity don't allow any team to have this much talent, and the recent signings have turned the Blackhawks into PIT 2.0.....and we all know what happened to the supporting staff on that team over the last three-four years - GONE

The difference between the Hawks and the Penguins is that Chicago has continually brought cheap replacement talent into the fold to replace older player, while the Penguins have had to rely upon older more expensive players to fill out their team.

Chicago will likely move one of their older core players after this season to clear some cap space and remain a long team. That player will me the one who can most easily be replaced, so I'm guessing it's Sharp. By that time, Oduya, Richards, Versteeg and Bickell will likely all be gone. Guys like Morin, Smith, TT and a host of other solid prospects will have inherited roles, replacing more expensive players.

We saw what Chicago did after the won their first recent Stanley Cup to rebuild their depth. They have the prospect base to do it again, if required.

The beat will go on.

Toews and Kane at $10.5M seems like a lot now, but percentage wise it's quite a bit less than the $7M contracts given out to star players after the initial lock out. Toews and Kane were the first players signed with the rising cap who were young players in their prime. Gone are the "added on years" to decrease the cap. Teams would have lined up to give them $12M, with some bottom feeders giving them even more.

Who would you rather have, the Sedins at $14M, or the Toews/Kane at $21M? I guess the extra $7M allowed the Canucks to bring Vrbata aboard.
