Gardiner re-signs:

Jake Gardiner has signed a $20.25M, five-year extension with the #leafs. Gives him a $4.05M AAV.

A little more detail:

Gettin’ paid: Gardiner inks five-year, $20.25M extension with Leafs

Toronto has capped off a flurry of recent deals with a big one.

On Tuesday, the Leafs signed RFA defenseman Jake Gardinerto a five-year, $20.25 million deal, according to Sportsnet. The deal comes after an impressive campaign in which Gardiner posted career highs in goals (10) and points (31), all while averaging over 21 minutes per night in his third season as a Maple Leaf.

The deal also represents a big financial reward for the 24-year-old.

Gardiner gets a significant pay bump and will earn $4.05M annually with his new contract, making him Toronto’s second highest-paid blueliner — behind captain Dion Phaneuf, who makes $7M per year — and one of just two Maple Leaf rearguards to be signed past 2018 (Phaneuf’s the other).

It’s also a pretty dramatic turn of events considering that, roughly 16 months ago, the #FreeJakeGardinerhashtag/meme was a thing. Remember? Gardiner was toiling with the AHL Marlies — he’d only end up playing a grand total of 12 regular season games for the Leafs that year — when his agent decided to take his beefs to Twitter, leading to Randy Carlyle offering the Randy Carlyl-est of responses:

“When we feel it’s time for Jake Gardiner to come back we’re going to make that decision, and we’re not going to be influenced by anybody other than the people that are doing the assessing.”

Gardiner proved his doubters wrong that postseason, though, scoring five points in six playoff games in Toronto’s opening-round loss to Boston. He’s been a regular fixture in the lineup ever since, and now looks to be one of the cornerstones for the future.

As mentioned above, the deal caps off what’s been a busy period in Toronto. The Leafs have come to terms with a pair of their own free agents — Cody Franson and James Reimer — and inked veteran forwards David Booth and Daniel Winnik to one-year pacts.

$4M plus for him over the next 5 years, time will tell if that's a good price or not. I think that puts them under pressure for the cap (actually over) so we'll have to see if they make some moves with all the forwards they have available considering they still need likely one or two more D signed still.

I'd be happy with this deal if I were a Leafs fan. Might be a bit overpaid right now, but they are buying ufa years and banking on him breaking out and becoming a 50 pt defenceman. I believe by year three this will be a very good contract .

Apparently it only takes 30 points from an offensive defenseman to command 20 million contracts nowadays.

This is signature Leafs.

This time last year his coach didn't think he was ready to play defense at the NHL level.

What an unpredictable franchise.....player agent's dream.

Any movement or trade clauses?

And what does this do for Toronto cap wise moving forward?

Can't get on cap geek but it seems They've gotta be tight to it now

They had ~$3M in space before the signing. 17 forwards, 5 defencemen and 2 goalies on the roster, add in Gardiner now for 6 defencemen and ~$1M over the cap.

Basically. He made good strides last year, but suddenly he's their second highest paid defenceman and they're over the cap with players yet to sign and an incomplete roster.
