Dallas, Winnipeg (Proposal)

Recommended Posts

Double edged sword. On one hand, the Jets actually get good value in return. However, the big negative to this is that they significantly improve a Western Conference team, not necessarily in their interest. That said, they are only improving a team that is already a playoff team, not Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Nashville, or Phoenix.

Overall, if they are to trade within their own conference, improving a team that is destined to make the playoffs regardless of having Kane or not is not terrible. And the return suits what the Jets need in the long term.

As a Jets fan, I like it.

I would not do that if I were Dallas. That is an excellent top 6 might even be the best in the division but at some point you have to address that defense. I would do that trade if hockey was all about scoring goals and nothing else mattered.

Well yeah, they have to address their defense; but they are giving up players that will not be used in the near future to automatically become one of the strongest top 6 in the entire league. And should they require a defensemen at some point, when one becomes available, then they could trade one of their bonafide top 6 to improve their backend, all while not suffering too much offensively.

If this was something that was available to Dallas, they would be foolish not to. And to be honest, this wouldn't hurt Winnipeg either. Yes, they may not win the trade at the outset; however, Colton Sceviour has been developing nicely, and would be a solid 3rd liner, possibily 2nd if playing with the right people. As for Campbell, the Jets need help in goal ASAP. Pavelec is a nightmare, Comrie is at least 5 years away, and Hutchison is not nearly proven enough. Plus they receive a 2015 1st rounder; and even though that pick would inevitably end up in the 20-30 overall range, that's still a decent pick for a Jets organization that has been drafting incredibly well over the last 3 years.

Yea... But this doesnt take away from their defence either.

And with Faksa coming up in a couple years he is a very cheap 3C on ELC, Julius Honka very cheap on D for his ELC, and then with constantly increasing cap they should be able to bring in a couple solid additions to their D through free agency.

They could target Meszaros, Martin, Staal, Ehrhoff, or Franson in 2015 free agency.

I feel even though Jack Campbell has potential to be a great Goalie, that it wouldn't be enticing for them to retrieve him in a trade with Hutchinson, Hellebyuck, and Comrie in the pool for Winnpeg. Hutchinson showed real promising potential last season, so I don't see Campbell as someone they'd want, and he's a big piece of this trade unfortunately.

If I'm Dallas, no way do I trade Campbell. That guy can be a top 10 NHL goalie down the road, and great goalies are hard to find.

That said, this trade would not harm their roster really, and improves them drastically right now, giving them a shot to compete and maybe be a top team this year. Also with that, Lehtonen still has 4 more years on his deal, and is only 30, which means if they re-sign him after that deal, they really wont need a future star goalie for 7-8 more years, giving them plenty of time to find one, which makes Campbell expendable, albeit a dumb idea to trade him still. Not a bad trade for either side.
