4 Teams in 1 Year - Thomas Vanek

Recommended Posts

As we all know Thomas Vanek was a Buffalo Saber, New York Islander, Montreal Canadian and in the end became a Minnesota Wild in the off season. What other impact or high profile players have also bounced through 4 teams in 1 year? I can't think of any off the top of my head. Furthermore, why did this happen? Was it contract $, term, city, or family reasons? I'm sure Garth Snow offered him a better deal than he got in Minnesota. Or was he moved because of his character?

Let's start the discussion of who was the last NHL player to be on 4 different teams in one calander year.

It was already rumoured (before he was traded from Buffalo) that he was very interested in joining Minnesota once his contract was up. He played his university hockey there and loved it.

Vanek is clearly not a team guy.

Unfounded,

Traded to NYI from Buffalo because Buffalo is Buffalo.

Traded toMontreal from NYI because NYI is NYI.

Vanek now a UFA, signs with the Wild; a romored destination for him.

^ this plus his best buddy from back in Buffalo, Jason Pominville, is on the Wild. It was definitely a known fact that he was rental player last year and would be going to Minny when his contract was up.

Buffalo: Wanted to trade him before he became a UFA. He had said that he wasn't going to stay for a full rebuild.

NYI: Garth Snow couldn't seal the deal in order to keep him. They traded him to Montreal so they would at least get something back for him.

Montreal: He played uninspired hockey and went through the motions, even in the playoffs. It was obvious that he didn't want to be there.

Minnesota: He'll try to stay there for the rest of his career. Only time will tell if he will do well there.

who wouldn't sign a $7m/y offersheet in the mid-late 2000's?!?

Yep. It was perfect timing for him. It was the same year that Regier had screwed up horribly with Drury and Briere. Edmonton swooped in and gave him a 7.1 mill/yr. offer sheet and Regier had no choice but to match it if he wanted to keep his job. That was the beginning of Regier's downfall with the fans and media in Buffalo.

Not so sure about that. Did you watch the playoffs with Montreal? Vanek seemed to be coasting.

How about Dan Hamhuis??

He didnt play for 4 teams in one year, but his rights were exchanged 4 times in one year.

In less than 6 months, Craig Anderson went from the Blackhawks to the Bruins, to the Blues, and then back to the Blackhawks (all on waivers); and then was traded to Florida for a 6th rounder.

There we go, that's the first 4 team guy mentioed so far. Amazing it was in 6 months too! That would have been quite the travel scheduel.
