Babych will always be a beauty. I'm confused though. Are we or are we not a homer-hire team? Trev?

edit: Well gee if you're going to status update with a link to my How to Build a Good Hockey Team blog, then Dave Babych can stfu. lol

Hire a coach based on his resume, not based on the fact he used to play for the team.

2nd overall pick in 1980, a two time all-star, broke 40 points 10 times in his career (including five 50 points seasons).

That's a pretty decent resume.

Being a great player doesn't always translate into being a good coach. He had little experience before coming here.

If we're hiring a coach to work with our young defensemen, then hire the best junior coach available who has a resume for developing young defensive talent.

Definitely agree. Even though Babych is a likeable person and player, if we have the opportunity to pursue a better junior coach, then I feel it's a move the team has to make to be successful in the future. I can imagine it would have been a bit tough to let him go but personnel changes are inevitable...

Good luck Babych in your future endeavors!

Everybody has the start somewhere.

Experience is overrated. If that were the case, then you should be concern about the hiring of Desjardin as head coach.

I like Babych just fine but those stats of his are from a different era, one where defensemen often put up 50-100 points. If he's gone though I wish him the best of luck.

He was still Hartford's and Winnipeg's #1 defensemen all those years.

Was he a Norris candidate? No. But he was still a pretty darn good defensemen.

I would say he's pretty much the equivalent to Dan Hamhuis, of that era.

Desjardins just lead his team to the Calder Cup last season and won 2 Memorial Cups. He's coming in with a resume of being the best, sure he never coached in the NHL but he knows how to win.

Most great NHL coaches started from junior success to pro success. Babcock is the first one that comes to mind.

Hence, why I said everybody has to start somewhere.

Babych has always had a good knowledge of the game. He's been coached by the very best, and played with Hall of Famers. He's more likely to succeed as a defensive consultant than some random joe at the junior level.
