The rivalry was really between the Hawks and Luongo, it came and went with Luongo.

I dont believe Luongo getting regularly lit up by the Hawks in the playoffs was what established the rivalry. It did make for some interesting storylines within it though.

One of the worst statements I have ever read on these boards.

Do you even know who's in the Hall of Fame? Look at some of the players who have never made it in, and yet you think those two guys are shoo ins? I want to say more on this subject, but it will come across as mean and personal, so I will leave it alone.

As much as I too despise the Blackhawks there is no way you can argue, at least for Toews anyways, that he isn't a first ballot Hall of Famer. Toews has won two world junior golds, a world championship gold and silver, two Olympic golds, two Stanley Cups. He has also been awarded a selke, conn smythe, and an Olympic MVP. He was also the third youngest captain in NHL history. The man is a living legend and in my opinion the best player in the NHL.

Kidding me right? Key players of teams who've won two cups? Original six teams no less? That's an automatic.

Wow. I don't want to start listing the many awards and achievements made by both players, already, but I didn't think I needed to. We're well aware, aren't we?

Even if their careers stopped today, they'd still get in, because they get a pile of early career end sympathy from the selection committee, who btw includes Scotty Bowman.

Um, you can change the windowdressing of the roster, but one very important aspect to the winning window is the ability/age of your key players.

The Sedins are now 33yrs old. The entered their war with the Hawks at age 27

Toews and Kane won their first cup when they were 20 and 21. They are now 25 and 26.

So by the age the Sedins were ready to compete for the cup, Toews and Kane have already accomplished enough to be in the HOF. And they're not near done yet.

This understates the importance of franchise players, YOUNG franchise players, in the cap era. The younger the franchise players, the longer the winning window, and the more affordable they will be during their winning window.

I explained this as part of my How to Build a Good Hockey Team blog:

http://forum.canucks.com/blog/751/entry-1850-how-to-build-a-good-hockey-team/

Overall, it's way past time for the Canucks to stop chasing the shadows of greater franchises and instead start acting on a legit winning plan of their own.

Let's hope this happens. Go Canucks Go!

ps. The Canucks did make all sorts of windowdressing changes since 2011. Was this not noticed?

Yep, while we were excited that the Sedins had hit their full potential at age 30, the Hawks won a Cup with a much younger crew. Not much of a comparison really.

Chicago has a right to be cocky, but shouldn't really forget their past and be humbled by the years of mediocrity they endured.

Just because something has panned out for one team doesn't mean it'll apply to another. Glad their fans feel like they're on top of the world and have a good team, but they should remember it's a short fall off that perch. Bring it.

The rivalry was really between the Hawks and Luongo, it came and went with Luongo.

It came and went with our elitism. As soon as we stopped being even remotely close to being a threat it stopped being a rivalry. The rivalry was definitely much more than them vs Luongo.

Also doesn't help that Hawks don't have Bolland or Byfuglien either.

About the Hawks staying elite and us not, that's not surprising. We didn't suck for a decade and win a lottery...

We did suck for a long time then draft the Sedins 2nd and 3rd though, which is pretty close.

Cry? pfffftttttt.......... I look forward to playing that team.

3 games vs. them last year.

One loss was 5-2 but then a shootout win, and another 1 goal loss.

And that was the year everyone considers a disaster. We will have a winning record vs. them this year. Book it.

Who cares what our regular season record was vs them last year they made the WCF and we didn't even make the playoffs.

I don't think Vancouver would still have an NHL team if they tried Chicago's winning strategy of complete failure for so damn long.

I know id stop watching.

They were terrible for a decade

But I thought Edmonton was the approach to complain about. Now it's Chicago too? The dynasty team?

We're pretty hard to impress considering we have zero cups in 40+ years.

Realistically, the Blackhawks didn't really begin their winning ways until Bill Wirtz died in 2007. As soon as Rocky took over, the team turned around for the better and they actually started developing their stockpiled prospects, including of course their latest superstar duo, instead of letting them go to waste like in years past. 3 years later, cup.

I think the Canucks have the ownership and the management that wants to win, but not nessesarily the players (or prospects) to do it.

The Canucks aren't going anywhere. They're the only big league game in town. And the NHL wants them to stay here because of the inflated ticket prices. But after 40+ fairly frustrating years, I think we're about ready to see a winner. So I hope the Canucks keep on task and instead of focusing on 'entertaining the fans' or 'selling tickets' they do realize that the ONLY goal for the franchise should be to win it's first cup.

This 'oh i'm not going to watch if they bad' approach to being a fan is horrible anyway. Sometimes, no all the time, rebuilding teams aren't all that good. What, did you think the good times were going to last forever?

Here's hoping that after the rebuild comes we can start cheering for a legit-looking, non-overrated contender and that we can finally win a cup after so many painful years for Canuck fans. (The bandwagoners will be happy to.)

Go Canucks Go!

Or you can start cheering for this team, enjoy competitive hockey and watch to see Benning's life work and challenge unfold before your eyes.

If he is as competent as his resume appears ,the team will continue to be built properly and surprise much earlier despite the nagging naysayers constantly advertising against him.

So TSN is rating and talking about Chicago's 2014/15 chances today. In the chat boards below the article was one I had to cut and paste. It's so true because our team is scared of change and has let the team fall apart because of it. Here it is:

To think a couple of seasons ago the Canucks were competing with this team. Now all Nuck fans can do is look at the hawk roster and cry... icon_report_off.gif

The reason this is true is because of good management. After Chicago won their first cup, they traded away Dustin Byfuglien, Ladd and Versteeg. Three players who would be on the top two lines of our current team and they've won a cup since...........change is necessary Benning, Linden, please take note of this and make the appropriate changes moving forward. Don't be like Gillis and hire sleep doctors, look at what Bowman and Holland do and mimick them please.

Thanks for the usual/coming out vcrguy. Mimick the Redwings lol. Now why didn't Gillis think of that?

Benning doesn't need any schooling from you regarding how to build a team or the need for change. You may have heard, but he has a ring of his own.

Anyhow, another vcrguy thread start. Where have you been? You probably lead CDC in offensive zone starts haha.

They weren't traded for the sake of change. They were traded because of cap issues. When Chicago won their first cup they still had quality prospects coming up as well from their bottom feeding days. When Gillis took over here there was nothing in the prospect pool and the team was too good to get high quality picks. Very different situations. The only way to mimic Chicago is to wallow at the bottom of the league for 5 to 8 years to get a bunch of top 5 and top 10 picks. Then in 8 to 10 years we just may be a contender.
