on the cycle
I am of the mind that hopefully hockey can become bigger in China; with the population China has (almost 1.367 billion people) even if only 1% of China plays hockey that's 13.67 million people at any league level and age is more than even Canada can could ever produce because that would be about a 1/3 of Canada and not enough people here can even afford to play to get to that number. China, even with very little interest could be a great producer of prospects even if they're development system were very inefficient they would create a lot of professional hockey players purely because of their population. I would like to here what everyone thinks about this idea.
Chalky
Having another major country involved in global hockey can only help the game at this point. It is becoming more of a level playing field as it is now, and if China could compete, I would be all for it. I can already foresee their strategy though. Same as other winter sports. They will hire the best in the world to coach and teach them the game, and come to the events with the focus of a precision lens.
on the cycle
Also Hockey Canada has already been growing the game in other countries in eastern Europe and I believe they will turn their attention to China. China is already apt at winter sports, just look at the winter Olympicsm Hopefully another person like Ted Noland with Latvia can help a country like China. The thing is China has influence from Russia and I believe the KHL could include a few Chinese teams should the KHL expand or the minor league of KHL the MHL. I just want to see more stars instead of goons like a say John Scott who can't even skate, he's just big and can fight. I am not against fighting in fact I am for fighting, but you have to be able to play, and play well. No more "Plugs". This is something I will continue to watch develop. Kudos to the Canucks for going to China this year and teaching those kids.
Aladeen
If 0.01% of China played hockey that would be 136,700 people playing, not 13 + million Not saying I disagree with your point, just your math.

on the cycle
Oh im sorry I put in the calculating number not the actual percentage.
on the cycle
Anyway I believe .1% is more realistic which would be 1.367 million which is quite a bit more than Canadas (543,000 approx.) Which is a lot and would give the hockey world a shot in the arm.
Stierlitz
Last week Rene Fasel, president of IIHF, was in Astana, Kazakhstan and talked about possible Chinese KHL team in near future. The reason for this project is Winter Olympic Games 2022 in China and that Chinese sport officials want to have competitive national hockey team by that time. Rene Fasel said that both KHL and Chinese top executives are very interested in this project - you know this would mean huge money into KHL and politics. Russian teams are not happy since this means significantly increased travel time and lower quality of hockey in the KHL Eastern conference. We'll see what is going to happen. Stierlitz
Well, IIHF includes 54 full members - these nations have their own independent hockey association and regularly participate in the various IIHF-sanctioned World Championships. At the same time ICC (International Cricket Council) includes just 10 full members.

Stierlitz
President of IIHF Rene Fasel has said in his interview on Aug 22 that his goal is to have two Chinese teams in KHL by 2022. He visited China to discuss hockey development in that country.
MoneypuckOverlord
China is not really "investing" in hockey right now. They can bareley handle soccer as we speak, let a lone an expensive sport in Hockey. We know Charles Wang is trying to grow the sport there, but with 41 rinks, and still expensive gear to boot, sport will grow but very slowly. Lancaster
I can just imagine all the substandard hockey products those players would be using.... A lot "8auer" skates and "N1KE" hockey sticks, lol.
BCNeil
There is more to hockey in other places.....then just population size.. Building and running hockey arenas costs money. Its like saying with Canada's population we should have more pro golfers. So lets remedy that by doubling the number of golf courses in Canada
iinatcc
I always thought Japan would be the next logical choice to grow the sport. They do have a national team and the women's team have competed in the Sochi winter Olympics.
BCNeil
I think if China wanted to have a national team.....it would end up being all Canadians. I remember one olympics I think. Italy was in....all the players were born and raised in Canada...
