NHL rumors: Oilers' Nail Yakupov generating interest on trade market

After enduring one of the worst starts in franchise history, the Edmonton Oilers could be looking to make a change. There are certainly enough people on the outside suggesting they do so anyway. The question is who is available, if anyone?

According to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, there seems to be some buzz surrounding winger Nail Yakupov, Edmontons first overall pick in 2012.

The outside interest doesnt matter much if the Oilers arent willing to deal, but the Oilers might have to consider changing things up and getting older instead of continually going younger. Yakupov still has some cache due to his first overall pedigree and his offensive talent despite tepid numbers in his young career.

The numbers havent quite been there yet, though. Yakupov had a solid rookie campaign, but his numbers dipped in an injury-shortened 2013-14 season. The speedy Russian has three points through six games this year.

Of the Oilers top young players, Yakupov might be the easiest to replace considering Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle all have high salaries and have better established themselves as producers so far.

Yakupov is on the last year of his affordable entry-level contract. For a team in need of immediate help offensively on the cheap, he could be a fit. There's also the added bonus of possibly being able to work out a fairly reasonable extension with the 21-year-old.

This wouldn't be the first time Yakupov's name has come up in trade rumors. He was mentioned quite a bit last season and nothing came to pass, but the rough start in Edmonton this year could change the strategy some.

If there is interest in Yakupov, it is at least worth exploring what kind of return can be brought back. Dealing Yakupov would give up on his still-high potential, perhaps a bit too soon, but the Oilers have been waiting on potential as an organization for far too long.

The Oilers finally jettisoned Sam Gagner in the offseason after his value continually dipped. Capitalizing while Yakupov can still bring in a solid return might be the best move for Edmonton now and moving forward, even if it wouldn't be an easy one.

Interesting. Would make a lot of sense for the Oilers to trade him now and get some good value in return while they can. Guessing the price would be an NHL dman (preferably young), prospect, and a 1st/2nd rounder depending on the quality of the prospect.

Just off the top of my head, can see 2 of the 3 teams interested being Nashville and Columbus.

Higgins has relative Corsi of 28.9, 19th in the league among forwards.

Yakupov's is -23.7, which is worst on the Oilers (by far), and 344th (out of 403) in the league.

So...um...no.

Higgins has a higher corsi than crosby. Does that mean he's better?

Guess we better be offering higgins for crosby. We can tell Rutherford that Higgins Corsi is better therefor he is better. It will work right?

Grain of salt my friend.

Ok, I read the OP three times, where does it mention any number of teams or specific teams that are interested? This is little more than speculation that there's some interest, but we have no idea if the Oilers are listening to any calls on him.

If Yakupov is available, you jump on it.

With the right teacher, this kid could be special. Eakins is really messing him up.

I really think playing for a coach like Willie would do nothing but wonders for him. He won't grow in that toxic environment right now.

Vancouver isn't a trade target for I'm the Oilers and I'm looking to move Yak. We're talking about divisional rivals here, I doubt the Oilers move Yakupov for what we've got here.

Later on in the season, if the Canucks dip a little bit they should look at Edler, Burrows and Hansen as potential names to ship out. Yakupov would be a great player to add to the young core in Montreal. If he's flanking his buddy Galchenyuk on the wing there and they're maturing together then that's a move with a lot of potential for the Habs.

Edmonton could pry hometown boy Brendan Gallagher out of Montreal with Yakupov coming their way, who I think could be a potential Oilers captain if he heads out there.
