Syracuse Crunch Set Record For Most Fans At an Indoor Game

Recommended Posts

Syracuse, N.Y. The Syracuse Crunch will play the Utica Comets on Saturday night in the Carrier Dome in front of the largest crowd to ever watch an indoor pro game in the United States.

Crunch owner Howard Dolgon said early Friday morning that after confirming group ticket sales holds late Thursday night it was clear the team had officially locked up a spot in the record books. The game will easily surpass the mark of 28,183 that attended the Philadelphia-Tampa Bay playoff contest in the Thunderdome on April 23, 1996.

"From when we first announced it (in June), this is certainly a tremendous accomplishment, and says so much about Syracuse,'' Dolgon said Friday morning. "We knew there was an appetite for big events. What we had to do was create a big event. We knew the challenge. But we made sure to add the extra curricular events to make this event big. With two days to go, we're still working at it.''

That raises the question of how high the final attendance tally will go. Right now, 30,000 seems a conservative estimate.

To put that in perspective, such a total would put the Crunch in the mix with the biggest crowds to watch a men's basketball game in the Carrier Dome last season. The Orange men hit 30,000 four times: Duke (35,446) North Carolina (32,121), North Carolina State (31,572) and Pittsburgh (30,046).

With nearly two full days of sales left, Dolgon said about 8,000 seats with good sight lines remain. On a typically strong night of walkup sales for a Saturday night regular game at the War Memorial, Syracuse routinely draws in excess of 1,000 walkup fans.

Reported 30,700 in attendance.

To put that in perspective ...

Florida Panther's announced attendance for the year through 7 games is 63,000. Announced.

So basically, Tampa's AHL team equal half of what the Panthers have done all year in one game. I'd say they have won the Florida state hockey wars.
