@VanCanucks: #Canucks recall Alex Biega from @UticaComets.

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the Canucks have recalled defenceman Alex Biega from the AHL Utica Comets.
Biega, 26, has collected 10 points (2-8-10) in 25 games with the Comets this season. He currently ranks second amongst Comets defencemen in scoring. The Montreal, Quebec native spent the 2013.14 season with the Utica Comets, collecting 22 points (3-19-22) in 73 games played.
The 5’10”, 193 pound defenceman was originally selected 147th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres.

Solid news. Been the 2nd best dman in Utica behind Sanguinetti.

...love that new management is calling up players that are playing hard and working for their opportunity to get a call up. Years past it was call up the big name prospects even if they're doing bad in the minors. Already see a bit of Bruins work in place here...it's how they operate with their call ups and have been damn successful in doing so :)

How is corrado playing? I had hopes he would be ready this year.

Not so good but he hasn't been given a real chance. Don't expect to see Biega slotted in right away. I'm sure this is WD wanting to see this kid a bit more, get him in some pro level practices, give tips, and see how he responds. If he reacts well, Willie might give him a game or two.

Andersson? Sanguinetti? Corrado?

Who is slotting in to the actual on ice line up??

*edit** Is it possible they are going to do a revolving door to showcase pieces of the Comets roster as part of a trade? Couple of games here and there, next call up and so on?

Except it is kind of hard to show case from the press box. I think it is to make sure no one person sits for too long.

He's improved since last year. I've been watching him and his defensive game has become much more prominent. He's small in stature but moves the puck well and has a wrister that is better than Tanev's at the very least.

Hope he gets a look.

Cool, hope we get a chance to see him play tomorrow. Im starting to become more and more a fan of the smaller, fast moving d men.

At the very least he'll be no less offensive than a guy like sbisa, and no less defensive than a guy like weber. Could push some vets to play better. :)

Agreed, and well said.

Damn, I thought for sure since Benning was scouting Utica personally that he'd call up Sanguinetti. The guy's been awesome at both ends, has a booming shot and shoots R as well. Definitely Utica's best defenseman and probably an upgrade on Weber.

I had the same thought. Sanguinetti has been excellent this year. (At least that is what his numbers say and reports from Utica say the same thing.)

I think what is happening is that Biega will just be a healthy scratch. This gives him a chance to spend some time with the Canucks, earn some extra money, and gives the coaches a chance to watch him in practice. They did that with Sanguinetti earlier in the season.

I hope Sanguinetti gets a chance to actually play in the NHL before the season is over.

The Comets two best D-Men have been Alex Biega and Bobby Sanguinetti by a wide margin. Biega was also voted the Comets best D-Man last year at the season ending awards ceremony and has improved even more this year.

Biega is on the smaller side but still plays a physical game and is an excellent mobile puck moving defense. He has worked his tail off the past two seasons in Utica and it is great to see him rewarded with a call up. Hopefully he will get a chance to see some game action and not just sit in the press box but either way congrats Alex!
